Citv Of Tukwila
Police Department
An Accredited Agency
December 10, 2015
6:30pm- 8:OOpm
Jim Haggerton, Mayor
Michael Villa, Chief of Police
Present: Chief Villa, Chris Partman, Kim Karns, Jan Bolerjack, John Lindsay, Jerry Thornton, Laurie Clark,
Minutes for 11/12/15 meeting approved
Chief's update
COPs grant has been approved by the City Council. This is for $250K over 3 years for 2
officers. The City commitment is roughly $960K. While the department does not have any
Somali officers, TPD has become more diverse and has officers who speak: Vietnamese,
Bosnian, Spanish, Tagalog, Hindi and others. We also have 4 officers who spent 2 -5 years in
refugee camps.
Records Management System approved at the last Council meeting. Ability for online
reporting, much better ability to get information, statistics and reports from system. Also can
interface with other Valley Agencies, if we pay a bit extra. Will go live early 2017.
Shooting on TIB, was not a homicide. Appeared to be a dispute between the parties who
knew each other. Update, the victim passed away.
Good of the Order
Laurie, at the school district there are concerns about youth violence. These are incidents
near the school, not on district property. Most of them do not live in Tukwila and the school
district is working about it. There have been a lot of difficult conversations with parents
about involvement by their children. Luis could not come tonight but will be at the next
meeting. There is also another student interested, she is invited to attend any and all
meetings.
Jan, asked about how the police deal with homelessness. Answer: There is a group working
to put together a City strategy to deal with homeless individuals. There are a lot of citizen
complaints about homeless encampments. It is a big issue in the City.
Chris, Mayor Elect Ekberg will attend the next COPCAB meeting.
John, Chris presented for the Civil Air Patrol Squadron at Boeing Field. This group assists
with search and rescue and other emergency services.
Meeting adjourned at 7:50pm
6200 Southcenter Blvd. Tukwila, WA 98188 • Phone (206) 433 -1808 • Records Fax (206) 244 -6181 Invest.
