City of Tukwfla Allan Ekberg, Mayor
Police Department - Mike Villa, Chief
July 14, 2016
6:30pm- 8:OOpm
Members Present: Jerry Thornton, Jun Castillo, John Lindsay, Kim Karns, Jun Castillo
Staff Present: Chief Mike Villa, Deputy Chief Bruce Linton, Chris Partman
Guest: Terry Goodwin
• Tukwila Public Safety Plan Presentation by D/C Linton
• For plan and information, go to www.tulcwilawa.gov
• Introductions
• Minutes for 4/14/16, 5/19/16 and 6/9/16 meetings approved
• Chief's update
• Continuing with pilot of body cameras
• Two weeks ago Chief Villa received an invitation from the White House to
attend a briefing on the President's Task Force on 21st Century Policing. The
biggest gap in following the recommendations in the report is social media
outreach.
• Since attending this meeting Chief Villa has been invited to assist other
departments via teleconferencing.
• Question: is there a concern after the shootings in Dallas, and how is that stress
managed? Copycat incidents are always a concern. One thing is to have
officers only respond in pairs to incidents. Officers are aware the danger is out
there but also are taught to handle that stress. Chief is holding judgment about
publicized police shootings, because we don't have the whole story. TPD does
a lot of training around crisis type incidents to provide officers with the proper
tools to use force appropriately and without bias.
• Question: In reference to bombing in France, what is TPD doing to prevent
similar issues? There is a protocol to identify if there are any local connections
to the event and use that to identify potential targets. We are also connect with
the FBI and Counter - terrorism Task Force and get warnings from them as well.
Another concern is about a "lone wolf' type attacker, who is totally off the
radar.
Tukwila City Hall • 6200 Southcenter Boulevard • Tukwila, WA 98188 • 206 -433 -1800 • Website: TukwilaWA.gov
