City •
® Allan Ekberg,Mayor
o Parks&Recreation Department-Rick Still,Director
•o=
INFORMATIONAL MEMORANDUM
TO: Arts Commission
FROM: Dave Johnson, Parks & Recreation Manager
DATE: February 8, 2017
SUBJECT: Access For All ballot initiative via 4Culture/Cultural Access Washington
ISSUE
Ballot initiative to be placed before the King County voters later this year called Access For All
BACKGROUND
The cultural community is gearing up for a ballot initiative to be placed before the King County
voters later this year called Access For All. This initiative will support direct grants to hundreds
of arts, heritage and scientific organizations, free access and education programs for students
in K-12 schools and free and low cost access for all residents of King County. The effort is
being organized by Cultural Access Washington (CAWA), a consortium of organizations and
community leaders who have been working on the initiative at the state and local level for
years. The King County Council will decide in the next month whether to proceed with the
ballot measure. Because the initiative will impact every arts and cultural organization and
school district in King County, CAWA is asking for letters of endorsement from Local Arts
Agencies. The legislation is scheduled to go before the council at the end of February. We are
providing you and your commission with this information to give them the opportunity to
contact their county council representative this month with their support. I have enclosed
several templates for a commission endorsement and a one page fact sheet on the Access For
All initiative. More information is available at htt ://w culturalaccesswa.or /
DISCUSSION
Does the Tukwila Arts Commission wish to send an endorsement letter to the King County
Council for this initiative?
ATTACHMENTS
1.
