City of Tukwila
Allan Ekberg, Mayor
••= INFORMATIONAL MEMORANDUM
TO: Community Development and Neighborhoods Committee
FROM: Rick Still, Director Parks & Recreation
BY: Robert Eaton, P&R Manager
CC: Mayor Ekberg
DATE: February 13, 2017
SUBJECT: KaBOOM! Grant Opportunity
ISSUE
Update on KaBOOM! Grant Opportunity
BACKGROUND
In November of 2016 Tukwila Parks & Recreation (P&R) was contacted by the KaBOOM!
organization, with a potential grant opportunity through a third party funder, to install a
playground in the greater Seattle area. The grant is valued around $85,000. KaBOOM! serves
to connect funding partners with local organizations by prescreening and selecting agencies
where children would benefit from having new playground equipment installed. P&R expressed
interest in pursuing this potential grant opportunity and identified Cascade View Community
Park as the best match for the program's goals.
Staff followed the application process outlined on page two of the KaBOOM! Grants Overview
Flyer (Attachment A), by completing the online application forms. This consisted of providing
information regarding the park (demographics, programs, park usage, site plan, maps,
background information and capital equipment replacement plan). Upon completion of the
online forms, KaBOOM! requested an Interview Call (step 2 of the application process) to talk
more specifically about the project and those that would benefit from it. P&R coordinated with
several community members and the Tukwila School District (TSD) for this call which happened
on February 2, 2017. Attachment B is a Project Summary that provides a lot of additional
information of the grant program.
DISCUSSION
The next steps in the application process are providing follow-up materials as requested by
KaBOOM! which includes a Letter of Intent (Attachment C) and other miscellaneous materials.
After this, KaBOOM! will review all materials and make a determination whether or not to partner
the agency with the funding partner and award the grant. If the grant is awarded, then an
agreement will be entered into to officially execute the project and the funding agency will be
revealed. If approved, the project will culminate with a one day install on Saturday, July 22, 2017.
One of the greatest goals of this grant program is community involvement, so P&R will be
actively reaching out to the community and partnering with TSD's Community Liaisons for
involvement and participation.
5
