PRESS RELEASE
Contact
Brandon J. Miles
Senior Planner
City of Tukwila, Department of Community Development
(206) 431 -3684, Brandon.Miles(@Tukwilawa.gov
Citv of Tukwila Offers FREE Training on Rain Garden Installation
Tukwila, WA- July 28, 2011 -The City of Tukwila is proud to announce that it will offer a free training for
residents and property owners on how to install rain gardens for single family homes. The rain garden
program is part of the City's commitment to improve water quality and salmon habitat within the City.
Rain gardens are a great way for homeowners to reduce the pollution that comes from their lawn and
driveways. Water from single family homes will eventually reach nearby streams which will carry the
water to the Duwamish and Green Rivers and ultimately to Puget Sound. Rain gardens help to filter the
water, reducing pollution levels in run -off. "Salmon restoration and cleaning up Puget Sound starts at
home notes Mayor Jim Haggerton. "This class will provide homeowners and residents the basic
understanding of how to install their own rain garden," he added.
The class will take place on September 7, 2011at 6PM in Meeting Room B at the Tukwila Community
Center. On September 10, 2011 participants can gain first -hand experience in installing the City's first
rain garden at Duwamish Riverbend Hill Park starting at gam. Both events are FREE but space is limited.
To register or for more information send an email to Stacey Gianas at sgCcDstewardshiaaartners.org.
The City has partnered with Stewardship Partners and Cascade Land Conservancy to provide the rain
garden training. Funding has also been provided by a Waterworks Grant provided by King County
Department of Natural Resources and Parks. "I want to thank Stewardship Partners, Cascade Land
Conversancy and King County for their support in the rain garden training program, noted Mayor
Haggerton. "Without their support we would be unable to provide this program," he added.
