TUKWILA FIRE DEPARTMENT <br />***PRESS RELEASE*** <br />FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION <br />Updated: August 17, 20114:45 am <br />In the early morning hours of August 17, 2011, the Tukwila Fire Department responded <br />to an apartment fire in the 15000 block of Military Road South. Crews quickly called for <br />a second alarm when they discovered flames in the attic space. We had Mutual Aid from <br />the City of SeaTac, Burien, North Highline, Kent, King County Fire District 20, Zone 3 <br />Fire Explorers, our department Chaplain and South King County Paramedics, <br />On arrival crews found smoke and fire from a second story apartment unit. <br />Two second story apartments were damaged by fire, three others on the first floor <br />sustained damage from smoke and or water. All five units were occupied. Red Cross <br />responded and is assisting them as needed. <br />The first 911 call came in at 12:47 am. Alert citizens assisted in waking up other <br />residents to help evacuate the building. Everyone was able to get out of the building, and <br />we have no reports of citizen injuries. <br />One firefighter was injured while battling the fire when saturated ceiling tiles fell on him. <br />He was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released. <br />Damages are estimated to be around $175,000. <br />The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
