City of Tukwila <br />City Council Community Development & Neighborhoods Committee <br />COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT & NEIGHBORHOODS COMMITTEE <br />Meeting Minutes <br />May 29, 2018 - 6:00 p.m. - Hazelnut Conference Room, City Hall <br />Councilmembers: Kate Kruller, Chair, Verna Seal, Zak Idan <br />Staff: John Dunn, Stephanie Gardner -Brown, Nora Gierloff, Jack Pace, Craig <br />Zellerhoff, Brandon Miles, Darren Hawkins, Laurel Humphrey <br />Guests: Chuck Parrish, resident; Brian Morris, Renton City Comicon <br />CALL TO ORDER: Chair Kruller called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. <br />I. BUSINESS AGENDA <br />Motion was made, seconded and carried to consider the business in the following order: grant <br />application to King County, afterschool program, lodging tax applications, and accessory dwelling <br />unit regulations. <br />A. Grant Application: King County Veterans, Seniors and Human Services Levy <br />Staff is seeking Committee approval to apply for $75,000 in Veterans, Seniors and Human <br />Services grant funding from the King County Department of Community and Human Services. <br />Funding is sought for the development of an Older Adult Recreation Program and Services Needs <br />Assessments, which will be used to provide recommendations for future programming and <br />service needs. In addition, funds would be used to install automatic doors at primary entrances <br />and main restrooms at the Tukwila Community Center. UNANIMOUS APPROVAL. <br />B. City of Tukwila After School Activity Program Update <br />Staff briefed the Committee on the After School Activity Program at Tukwila Community Center, <br />which the Parks and Recreation Department has been running since the Tukwila School District <br />discontinued its partnership with the YMCA in 2016. The City's relocated and expanded program <br />started in January 2017 and has seen steady growth ever since. The program currently has 98 of <br />100 slots filled, with 1/3 of participants paying full price and nearly 2/3 participating for free. The <br />program includes healthy snacks, homework help, active play, arts and projects and has <br />received very positive feedback from families. The Tukwila School District provides bus <br />transportation. Committee members expressed appreciation for the program and <br />acknowledged that staff will be seeking direction later this year through the biennial budget <br />process. Chair Kruller offered to reach out to tech companies about the possibility of donating <br />20 computers to the program. DISCUSSION ONLY. <br />
