City of Tukwila
City Council Community Development & Neighborhoods Committee
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT & NEIGHBORHOODS COMMITTEE
Meeting Minutes
July24, 2018 - 5:30 p.m. - Hazelnut Conference Room, City Hall
Councilmembers: Kate Kruller, Chair; Kathy Hougardy, Zak Idan
Staff: Rick Still, Jack Pace, Laurel Humphrey
CALL TO ORDER: Chair Kruller called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.
I. BUSINESS AGENDA
A. 10-Minute Walk Grant Update
Staff updated the Committee on the status of the 10-Minute Walk grant agreement, which was
last presented in April. The 10-Minute Walk grant is $40,000 in funding from the National
Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) to be used to reduce barriers to parks in underserved
communities. Tukwila is just one of twelve cities to receive this grant and is piloting a project to
test community engagement methods around development of a park in the park desert around
South 146th Street. The pilot project will be used to inform the PROS plan renewal and other park
development activities. Committee members expressed support for the project. DISCUSSION
ONLY.
II. MISCELLANEOUS
Committee members and staff reviewed the 2018 Committee work plan, clarifying timeline and
details where needed. Staff will update the document prior to the next review. Staff also provided
an overview of current development activity in the City.
Councilmember Idan asked about the policy requiring City staff to obtain Committee approval to
apply for grants, and wondered if it could be streamlined. The Capital Improvement Program
policies direct this practice which staff has typically applied to all grant pursuits. Chair Kruller stated
that she likes the opportunity to learn about those activities. Staff will provide a copy of the policy
to Councilmember Idan.
Adjourned 6:21 p.m.
Committee Chair Approval
Minutes by LH, Reviewed by NH
