UKWILA I'OILIC„E DEPARTMENT
COPCAB Minutes
December 9, 2021
6:30pm — 8:OOpm
Virtual Meeting Via Microsoft Teams
Or call 253-292-9750
Conference ID: 526157821#
Members present: John Lindsay, Katrina Dohn, Roger Arnold, Jan Bolerjack
Staff present: Chief Eric Dreyer, Deputy Chief Eric Lund
Guest: None
Allan Ekberg, Mayor
Eric Dreyer, Chief of Police
• Approval of minutes: 10/14/21 meeting minutes approved (11/11/21 meeting was cancelled)
• Elections of officers — Katrina Kohn nominated and elected to chair.
• Officer of the month program — Community Commendation
1. Ideas include — random awarding (not necessarily monthly) as an officer is recommended, present at City
Council, certificate to the recipient, public display in foyer of Justice Center. Will kick off in January.
• Chief's Update:
1. Update on Shop with a Cop — Covid modified for 15 students to receive gifts at the EOC.
2. Update on SRO -not presently in the schools but filling in with patrol. Community forums coming up for
students, staff, and community. Working to build relationships.
3. Calls at Foster HS — Chief shared a chart that showed decreased calls while students were not on site due to
Covid. No real current comparison until we have a longer period of time with kids in school without SRO's.
4. Stats on school zone camera tickets — September had 1400 warnings, October went live and numbers cut in half,
November dropped again, December on track to drop again. Traffic may be using other streets.
5. Recent shootings — increase in violent crimes in S. King County. Working to increase presence on 99 and mall
area. None are known to be random but rather are targeted shootings (not necessarily pre -planned but
opportunistic)
6. Mall coverage during the holiday season - crime prevention — mall has tried to hire extra police staffing but only
filled about 1/3 of hours. Mall police station will open after mall repeater is repaired by January which will place
more officers on site.
7. Staffing Update — down 10 officers (7 are frozen from last year), changing entry level testing process but time lag
is a several -month wait to get them into the academy. Recruitment across the country is lagging but worse in
WA. Conversation about mandated vaccines — not required in Tukwila at this time.
8. Survey — Only 1/3 of folks who started to fill in the survey completed it. May need to revise the length and/or
questions. Still exploring the use of SPIDER that requests info automatically.
9. Graffiti — working with Parks & Rec and Public Works
15005 Tukwila International Blvd. Tukwila, WA 98188 • Phone (206) 433-1808 • Records Fax (206) 244-6181 Invest. Fax (206) 431-3688
