W AND V CONSTRUCTION FIRE - RESISTIVE WALL ASSEMBLY EXTERIOR EXIT BALCONIES EXCEPTION 6 TO SECTION 3305 (g) Figure No. 33-13 ROOF ASSEMBLY HEAVY TIMBER CONSTRUCTION WITHOUT CONCEALED SPACES SERVING AN OCCUPANT LOAD OF 10 OR MORE IN R -1 or I OCCUPANCIES; 30 OR MORE IN ALL OTHER OCCUPANCIES and are protected on the side of the occupied use spaces by a fire - resistive membrane extending from floor to floor. In such instance, the ceiling over the corridor may be considered part of a fire- resistive floor or roof assembly and the corridor side of the ceiling protected by appropriate ceiling materials which would satisfy the fire - resistance rating for the assembly. In the alternative, the code provides that the corridor ceiling could be of the same construction as permitted for corridor walls as shown in Case 2, Figure No. 33 -14. This last permission is essentially an exception. In all probability, typical wall construc- tion, when tested in a horizontal position, might not pass the one -hour test. However this arrangement is considered to be adequate protection for the corridor separating it from the spaces above. By establishing specific requirements for fire- resistive construction forcorri- dor walls and ceilings, the code is essentially attempting to get a minimal separation between the exit corridor and the occupied use spaces. Any arrange- ment of the one -hour fire- resistive construction that effectively inter between these use spaces and the corridor would satisfy this requirement. Having effectively protected the corridor as described above, the code r` permits nonrated ceilings to be suspended below the fire- resistive ceiling p..,- vided for corridor protection. In such cases, however, such ceilings must be of noncombustible materials. In that event it is not necessary to provide any further fire- resistive construction as shown in Case 4 of Figure No. 33 -14. Sec. 3305. (h) Openings. 1. Doors. Whenever the corridor walls and ceil- ings are required to be of one -hour fire- resistive construction as discussed above, openings through that construction must also be protected in order to maintain the integrity of the separation. Therefore, whenever such fire- resistive construction is required, every door opening into the corridor from any other building space must be protected by a door assembly having a 20- minute fire - protection rating. Such 20- minute assemblies are referred to in the Uniform Building Code as smoke- and draft - control assemblies. Their primary purpose is to minimize smoke leakage around the door and through the opening. For this reason, these doors shall not contain louvers and should not have excel undercuts. This protection is intended to be a two -way protection. At different times as important to protect the occupied use spaces from smoke in the corridor as k is under most other circumstances to protect the corridor from smoke that might be generated by a fire occurring within the use spaces. The 20- minute fire - protection rated assembly must be in compliance with U.B.C. Standard No. 43 -2. Essentially, this standard provides for the same test of the door as for other fire -door assemblies, except that in the case of the 20- minute smoke- and draft - control assembly the fire test does not include the hose stream. The door itself and the frame are required to be appropriately labeled or otherwise identified to establish the rating of the assembly. The name of the manufacturer of the door and the name of the service conducting the inspection of the materials and workmanship during the manufacturing process must be provided. Whether this be achieved by label or other type of identification or even certification, it is important that the building official be satisfied that the assembly does, in fact, comply with the test standard. /q 305 306 SUSPENDED CEIUNQ NONCOMBUSTIBLE STUDS FIRE-RESISTIVE PROTECTION' ADJACENT ROOMS FIRE-RESISTIVE FLOOR-CEILING ASSEMSL r NONRATED :• 1 F RE OAMPEFj REQUIRED RATED SUSPENDE►O CEILING CORRIDOR CASE ADJACENT ROOMS 2X BLOCKING WOOD STUDS ADJACENT - FLOOR aul l NONRATED SUSPENDED CEIUNQ FIRE-RESISTIVE 'M PROTECTION ; • 1 !
