For such a beam the torsional resistance is not affected by any restraint of the warping. In part (b) of the figure the left end of the member is assumed to be almost completely fixed as if it is embedded in concrete. For this case the torsional resistance is greatly increased. In the first case the flanges, though twisted, remain almost straight while in the second case they cannot be twisted laterally unless they are also bent out of shape. At the fixed end warping is prevented and St. Venant shear stresses are equal to zero. The resistance to torsion is provided solely by the shear stresses due to lateral bending of the flanges of the section. At other cross sections of the beam torsion is resisted by a combination of St. Venant torsion and warping torsion. This approximate method is desirably applied only to short members because results will be overly conservative in long ones. The later. bending stresses are calculated with the flexure formula Mrtan1e(bj / Jb° (412) t and the lateral shear stresses can be calculated with J VQ /I,l. The formula for 1 has been written as though the lateral moment due to H on one flange only is considered and so only one -half of I, is used in the denominator. This simple procedure for handling eccentric loading illustrated in Example 7 -9, which follows, will give calculated bending stresses that are on the conservative side but it can be shown that the shearing stresses obtained are on the small side. As a result, if torsion is very large, the designer should use a more rigorous approach. LINTELS Openings in brick or block walls which have relatively flat tops, such as windows and doors, require beams above them to support the masonry and other loads above. Although considerable arch action exists in the masonry after the mortar has set, it is still necessary to support the masonry while it is green to prevent settlement and possible destruction the arch action before it can develop. These supporting beams, cal lintels, may consist of any number of different shapes. For very small openings, flat bars or plates may be used, whereas angles are convenient for slightly larger openings. When the openings become quite large struc- tural tees, channels, S beams, W sections, or even built -up sections may be necessary. The amount of load that must be supported by a particular lintel is quite uncertain and a good estimate can only be made after a careful study is made of the particular situation. The window shown in Fig. 7 -18(a) is assumed to be located in a brick wall which is solid and continuous above and around the sides of the window. It seems logical to assume that the lintel will carry the triangular shaped portion of the wall above the window. This loading situation appears even more reasonable when it is known that examinations of old brick buildings often reveal cracks above the windows in approximately the shape of a triangle when the lintels have settled.
