Form F.P. 85 Summary of Armstrong Testing for Alternate Seismic Design Category C Installation on PRELUDE XL Grid Armstrong has conducted full -scale seismic simulation tests on the Prelude grid suspended ceiling system (ICBO Evaluation Report Number 5173) with an alternate installation for Seismic Design Category C using the State University of New York, University at Buffalo shake table in Structural Earthquake Engineering Simulation Laboratory. These tests followed the procedures outlined in the ICBO ES Acceptance Criteria for Seismic Qualification Testing of Nonstructural Components AC 156. The seismic simulation was based on the mapped spectral accelerations (from the International Building Code, 2000/2003 ed.) at short periods Ss up to 1.75G. Spectra were generated for horizontal and vertical earthquake shaking. Test reports documenting this testing can be found in UB CSEE/SEESL- 2003 -02, September 2003, and UB CSEE/SEESL- 2003 -03, November 2003. The system was installed as follows: The Prelude Suspension system consisted of Intermediate Duty main beams (Item # 7300), 48 inch cross tees (Item # 7342) and 7/8 inch wall molding (Item # 7800). The system tested was a 16 -foot X 16 -foot ceiling with simulated walls on all four edges. The main beams were cut with minimal clearance on two 36 hpeN^ew panels adjacent walls and lass than % inch clearance on the other two walls. Standard BERC clips were used on all cut ends of cross -tees. Two 2 ft X 4 ft light Terre motion fixtures were mounted in the center of the ceiling as shown. These were held in place with light clips (CADDY #515) and had two safety wires per fixture. No post or perimeter wires were used. Ceiling panels were 2 ft X 4 ft Lay -in panels — Item # 769A Cortega with and approximate weight of 0.6 pounds per ft North (hid tight b N W edb 1/4 Rcb ckuaom at S! Test reports documenting this testing can be found in UB CSEE/SEESL- 2003 -01, February 2003, UB CSEE/SEESL- 2003 -02, September 2003, and UB CSEE/SEESL- 2003 -03, November 2003. The Prelude Suspension system consisted of Heavy Duty main beams (Item # 7301), 48 inch cross tees (Item # 7348), 24 inch cross tees (Item # 7328) and 7/8 inch wall molding (Item # 7800). The system tested was a 16 -foot X 16 -foot ceiling with simulated walls on all four edges. The system was installed according to CISCA Guidelines for Seismic Restraint, Direct Hung Suspended Ceiling Assemblies, Seismic Zones 3 & 4 the International Building Code 2000 with the following exceptions: • 7/8 -inch wall support was used. • BERC 2 Clips were used in lieu of 2 -inch wall molding and stabilizer bars to prevent spreading of cross runner ends. Main runners and cross runners were attached to the perimeter members on two adjacent walls. A clearance of approximately'' / -inch was maintained on the two remaining walls. The suspension system had positively mechanically connected cross runners at spacing of 48 inches or less. The two walls that had the Winch clearance had 2" BERC clips to allow movement of 2" in lieu of 2" wall molding. This also served to prevent spreading of the cross tees rather than the use of stabilizer bars. Suspension wires of soft annealed galvanized no. 12 gage steel were spaced at 4 foot on center. All vertical wires were attached to the ceiling suspension member and to the support frame with a minimum of 3 turns within 3 inches of the connection. The terminal end of all cross runners and main runners were independently supported with no.12 gage hanger wire within 8 inches of all walls. One strut was fastened to the main runner and extended to the structural frame. This strut was placed 5 feet from two adjacent walls. Horizontal restraints were installed using four no.12 gage wire secured to the main runner within 2 inches of the cross runner and were splayed 90° from each other at an angle less than 45° from the plane of the ceiling. The acoustical panels were Armstrong Item 1911A— Ultima Beveled Tegular HumiGuard Plus which is a mineral fiber tile with a weight of 1.0 pounds per square foot. The two potential damage states that were defined were the loss of any ceiling panels from the suspension system where the panels fell to the floor and damage to any grid component that would require repair or replacement of the component. No panels were dislodged or fell to the floor from the suspension system after testing at earthquake spectra of 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 1.25, 1.50 and 1.75 %g. The suspension system showed no sign of any damage after testing at earthquake spectra of 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 1.25, 1.50 and 1.75 %g. This test indicates that the system as installed performs to a level that meets the intent of the 2000 International Building Code, 2003 International Building Code and ASCE 7 -02. University at Buffalo — Structural Earthquake Engineering Systems Laboratory The Structural Earthquake Engineering Systems Laboratory has a five- degree of freedom shake table which means it can move in five different directions (horizontal, vertical, pitch, roll and yawl). For us that means it moves in one horizontal direction and the vertical direction. The table is 12' X 12' but has been extended with a reinforced concrete testing platform which extends the size to 20' X 12'. The table has a useful frequency range from 0 to 50 Hz. The table is capable of a ± 6 in. movement, 30 in. /sec velocity and 1.15g acceleration at a payload of 44,000 pounds in the horizontal direction, and ± 3 in. movement, 20 in. /sec velocity and 2.30g acceleration in the vertical direction. This capability is greatly increased as the payload decreases. The laboratory is equipped with numerous velocity and displacement transducers, which are tied to a data acquisition system networked into the Universities computer system which can be transferred to computers around the world. UB's Structural Earthquake Engineering Systems Laboratory (SEESL), is the flagship laboratory in the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (MCEER).This will be a key piece of a nationwide "coliaboratory" developed by Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation in which earthquake engineers located at different institutions will be able to share resources and work together. The Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (MCEER) is a national center of excellence that develops and applies knowledge and advanced technologies to reduce earthquake losses. Headquartered at the University at Buffalo, the Center was established in 1986 by the National Science Foundation (NSF) as the country's first National Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (NCEER). MCEER unites a group of leading researchers from numerous disciplines and institutions throughout the United States to integrate knowledge, expertise, and interdisciplinary perspective with state- of- the-art experimental and computational facilities in the fields of earthquake engineering and socioeconomic studies. The result is a systematic "engineered" program of basic and applied research that produces solutions and strategies to reduce the structural and socioeconomic impacts of earthquakes. MCEER is principally sponsored by: the National Science Foundation, New York State and the Federal Highway Administration. The Center receives additional support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), other state governments, academic institutions, foreign governments and private industry. The Center's mission is: "to enhance the seismic resiliency of communities through improved engineering and management tools for critical infrastructure systems (water supply, electric power, hospitals). Seismic resilience (technical, organizational, social and economic) is characterized by reduced probability of system failure, reduced consequences due to failure, and reduced time to system restoration." Since its inception, MCEER has coordinated more than $120 million in projects to reduce our nation's vulnerability to earthquakes. For More Information... Damage occurs in one of two ways: • Connector dip bends • Base metal bends When this damage occurs, it allows unbraced sections of ceiling to move up to 3/8" at each connection. The cumulative effect of damage at the cross tee connections may move the ceiling more than 2 ". Consider the following example: z•wr rewwaz -» uwe. —. zw• 0 0 0 0 Before 0 0 0 0 4 a . 4 ' Braced E Potential MoeameM C zn• . sre• . z-w• Without perimeter support wires, test results demonstrate that the load of the ceiling may cause the main beams and crass tees to move beyond the 2" wall molding and drop out. System failure at the perimeter does not conform to the requirements of the code. Additional testing was done with an installation similar to that described but also included 24 inch cross tees (Item # 7328). Ceiling panels for this test were Angled Tegular Fine Fissured Humiguard Plus tile (Armstrong Item 1732) with an approximate weight of 0.75 pounds per ft The two potential damage states that were defined were the loss of any ceiling panels from the suspension system where the panels fell to the floor and damage to any grid component that would require repair or replacement of the component. No panels were dislodged or fell to the floor from the suspension system after testing at earthquake spectra of 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 1.25, 1.50 and 1.75 %g. The suspension system showed no sign of any damage after testing at earthquake spectra of 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, and 1.25 %g. The grid did show signs of damage at levels of 1.50 %g and higher. A level of 1.25 %g greatly exceeds the ground motion acceleration that would be expected in Design Category C. This test indicates that the system as installed performs to a level that meets the intent of the 2000 International Building Code for Seismic Design Category C.
