DATE ATTACHMENTS 04/25/16 Informational Memorandum dated 04/15/16 35 36 City of Tukwila Allan Ekberg, Mayor INFORMATIONAL MEMORANDUM TO: City Council FROM: Scholarship Selection Committee: Council President Joe Duffie, Nate Robinson, Teen Program Specialist, Joyce Trantina, Project Development Manager, Cheryl Thompson, Executive Assistant, Jenni Standard, College and Career Counselor Foster High School and Karly Feria, College and Career Counselor Tyee Educational Complex DATE: April 15, 2016 SUBJECT: Tukwila City of Opportunity Scholarship Recommended Recipients BACKGROUND In 2014 the City of Tukwila created the Tukwila City of Opportunity Scholarship program to provide financial assistance to high school seniors living in Tukwila to assist them in continuing their education beyond high school. The resolution adopting the Tukwila City of Opportunity Scholarship allocates $10,000 per calendar year for scholarship awards with each award being no less than $1,000 and no more than $5,000 each. Due to the requirement to notify recipients by April 30 each year, this matter has traditionally been forwarded directly to the full Council at a Committee of the Whole meeting for review. This year we advertised the scholarship on the City's website, on Channel 21, TheWash Board. org, Scholarships.com and informational brochures were provided to Foster High School, Aviation High School, Tyee Educational Complex and Seattle Christian High School. Mayor Ekberg and Project Development Manager Joyce Trantina attended lunch at Foster High School and made a presentation promoting the City's Scholarship. DISCUSSION A Scholarship Selection Committee comprised of Council President Joe Duffie, Nate Robinson, Teen Program Specialist, Joyce Trantina, Project Development Manager, Cheryl Thompson, Executive Assistant, Jenni Standard, College and Career Counselor at Foster High School and Karly Feria, College and Career Counselor at Tyee Educational Complex reviewed 17 eligible applications. Each reviewer individually considered the applicant's grade point average, financial need, educational and professional goals, community involvement (service, extracurricular activities, and employment experience) and personal essay. The committee then met to discuss the applications and recommendations. After discussion, the selection committee is recommending scholarships be awarded to seven applicants. In 2015 a $3,000 scholarship was awarded to Ada Jannina Arquiza. Ada ended up joining the military rather than going to the University of Washington so the school recently refunded the scholarship funds to the City. The scholarship selection 37 INFORMATIONAL MEMO Page 2 committee, with the support of the Mayor and the Council President, is requesting authorization from Council to reallocate the unused $3,000 from the 2015 scholarship funds and add it to the $10,000 allocated for 2016 scholarship funds. RECOMMENDATION Based upon review of the applications, consideration of all of the required components, discussion by the Committee, and pending Council approval to carry forward $3,000 from 2015 scholarship funds to the 2016 scholarship funds, we are recommending the following scholarship awards be approved at the May 2, 2016 Council Meeting: • $3,000 to Farhiya Abdi; • $2,000 each to Naina Biswa, Jamuna Budhathoki, Fadumo Hersi and Ignacio Martinez Avila; and • $1,000 each to Mercy Nuam and Ehler Tha Win. If Council does not authorize the reallocation of $3,000 from 2015 to 2016, we would request that the Council approve awards to the above - mentioned scholarship recipients, with award amounts to be determined after further review by the Scholarship Selection Committee, not to exceed $10,000. Scholarship recipients will be invited to the June 6 City Council meeting to be recognized by the Council.
