Mayor's Message
Celebrating the world's game —together!
What a year for Seattle sports! In the fall, we watched as the Seattle Mariners came within one game of making the
team's first World Series appearance. Then in February, we celebrated as the Seattle Seahawks won their second
Super Bowl in dominant fashion.
And yet, as exciting as those moments were, they will not even be the biggest sports celebration in our region this
year. In June, Seattle will welcome the 2026 FIFA World Cup' and host six matches. With our close proximity to
the airport, concentration of hotels, and excellent access to transit, Tukwila will be a major destination for fans as
they come to the region for the matches.
SEA26 More importantly, in a global community like Tukwila, soccer is a unifying
thread that connects us all. When I'm out in the community, I love seeing
kids from different countries, who speak different languages, coming
together to play a common game — soccer, football, or futbol. When they
rUKWILAZGplay, the differences in their spoken languages fade away, replaced by the
shared language of the game. That is what makes soccer so special. It's
also why I'm so excited to welcome fans from across the nation and around the world to our community this June.
Tukwila is getting ready to host the world. I encourage you to visit Tukwila26.com to learn more about the City's
World Cup planning efforts and the fun activities we have planned to celebrate this once -in -a -lifetime sports event.

Council Corner
By Armen Papyan, 2026 Council President
In my role as Council President, I chair the city's
Lodging Tax Advisory Committee (LTAC). While the
name may sound a bit technical, this committee is
responsible for very interesting and impactful work,
supporting tourism and helping make Tukwila a
welcoming destination.
With more than 2,000 hotel rooms, Tukwila welcomes
a significant number of overnight visitors each year.
People come to our city for many reasons: business
travel, visiting family, medical appointments, sporting
events, and vacations. These visitors support our
local economy and help strengthen our community.
Tukwila also sees a significant number of day tourists
who come here to dine, play, and shop.
Washington State law allows cities to collect a
Lodging tax on eligible overnight stays in local hotels.
Because of the large number of hotel rooms in
Tukwila, we are able to collect a substantial amount
of lodging tax revenue. By law, these funds must
be used to promote tourism, including marketing,
special events, and investments in visitor -related
infrastructure. In recent years, lodging tax funds have
supported Experience Tukwila, community cultural
events, and major attractions such as the Museum of
Flight and Starfire Sports.
This year, LTAC recommended, and the City Council
approved, the use of lodging tax funds to invest in
preparations forthe upcoming FIFA World CupTM. With
six matches scheduled at Lumen Field, we expect a
significant increase in visitors from mid -June through
mid -July. City investments include a viewing lounge
at Westfield Southcenter, a community block party,
and other events throughout Tukwila. In addition, we
are making physical improvements to help create a
welcoming environment, including banners, landscape
cleanup, and additional staff to respond quickly to litter
and maintenance needs during the tournament.
I hope you will join me in welcoming the world as
the largest sporting event on the planet comes to
our region. We have launched a special website,
Tukwila26.com, where residents and visitors can find
the latest information about soccer -related events and
activities happening throughout our community.
RECENT COUNCIL ACTIONS
• Authorized a contract funded by lodging tax with
True Blue Strategies for marketing, branding and
promotion services forthe 2026 World Cup
• Authorized a contract with Tyler Technologies, Inc.
for payroll and utility billing services.
• Authorized the transfer of general funds for capital
and major maintenance and for Law Enforcement
Officers' and Fire Fighters' (LEOFF) self -insured
healthcare.
• Established a 6-month moratorium on the change
of use, establishment, or development of facilities
forthe detention, transportation, and food
services for people detained by local, state or
federal law enforcement (Ord 2782).
