Q: �O <br /> y <br /> +R ..908 <br /> T ukwfia <br /> it o <br /> 0003 Washington <br /> Ordinance No. /919 <br /> AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br /> TUKWILA, WASHINGTON, ESTABLISHING AN EQUITY AND <br /> DIVERSITY COMMISSION; PROVIDING FOR THE PURPOSE <br /> AND SCOPE OF DUTIES OF THE COMMISSION; PROVIDING <br /> FOR SEVERABILITY; AND ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE <br /> DATE. <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Tukwila is a community that is experiencing remarkable growth in a citizenry <br /> that is culturally diverse; and <br /> WHEREAS, in a community comprised of citizens of different traditions and ethnicity reflecting cultural <br /> diversity, it is important to develop understanding, tolerance and appreciation for those differences, as well as <br /> finding common areas of strength; and <br /> WHEREAS, an Equity Task Force, consisting of representatives from the community, Tukwila School <br /> District and the City of Tukwila, dedicated to exploring issues related to equity and cultural diversity, existed <br /> informally for several years; and <br /> WHEREAS, a joint City /Tukwila School District Equity and Diversity Commission was established by <br /> Resolution 1369 in December, 1996; and <br /> WHEREAS, it has been determined by the City of Tukwila and the Tukwila School District that it is in <br /> the best interests of the community to provide direction, resources and a formal structure to the Commission; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, it has been determined that the creation of a formal commission will aid the residential and <br /> business communities in communication and cooperation through the promotion of tolerance and <br /> understanding in a culturally diverse environment; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TUKWILA, WASHINGTON, DO <br /> ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS: <br /> Section 1. Equity and Diversity Commission. <br /> A. Establishment of Commission. There is hereby established an Equity and Diversity Commission <br /> which shall serve in an advisory capacity to the Mayor and Council of the City of Tukwila and the Tukwila <br /> School Board. <br /> B. Purpose. The objective of the Commission shall be: <br /> 1. To promote understanding that accepts, celebrates and appreciates cultural diversity within the <br /> community. <br /> 2. To serve as a resource for the community by providing information and educational forums that <br /> will facilitate a better understanding and acceptance of cultural differences. <br /> 3. To provide recommendations to the Mayor, City Council and School Board that would identify <br /> opportunities to address cultural diversity issues or promote cultural diversity programs. <br /> C. Composition of Commission. The Commission shall be comprised of nine members who shall be <br /> appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Council.
