Geologists R Environmental Sr irnttsts In accordance with your request, Earth Consultants, Inc. (ECI) observed the installation of augercast piles and the preparation of foundation soil for the Exodus III site. The augercast pile installation was observed by an ECI field representative on a full -time basis during July, August, and September of 2000. Several additional piles were also observed during October of 2000. The eighteen (18) inch diameter augercast piles were installed to depths of approximately twenty -five (25) to forty -five (45) feet. h .., Based on our observations, the augercast piles achieved the recommended minimum five feet of embedment into the bearing strata. In our opinion, based on our observations, the augercast piles were installed in accordance with our geotechnical recommendations contained in the referenced letter, and should provide the recommended capacities. 1805 - 136th Place N.E., Suite 201, Bellevue, Washington 98005 Bellevue (425) 643-3780 FAX (425) 746-0860 Toll Free (888) 739-6670 Ci.ti&.:k. ::. a.: 'u'wr.'aL•QiL'.i . x!n" ".“41M Sabey Corporation December 1, 2000 We trust this information meets your current needs. Geotechnical Engineering Study E- 2579 -13 dated September 23, 1988 Dear Doug: This letter presents our recommendations for the remodel of the existing 60 -foot high single story building. The building was previously designated as Building E in the East Marginal Way Corporate Park. Earth Consultants, Inc. (ECI) previously prepared the referenced geotechnical engineering study for the construction of the building and provided construction monitoring services for the installation of the piles and foundations for the existing building. We understand the proposed remodel will include adding floor slabs and other improvements to the building. The improvements will include new augercast piles to support additional loading on the building. The loads on the piles vary based on location. In general, axial loads on the piles are on the order of seventy (70) tons with uplift loads varying from three tons up to seventy (70) tons. The following design values may be used for the augercast piles: Diameter Length 18 inch 25 feet 18 inch 35 feet 18 inch 45 feet 24 inch 25 feet 24 inch 35 feet 24 inch 45 feet Earth Consultants Inc. We estimate total settlement of single piles will be on the order of approximately one inch. Most of this settlement should occur during construction as the dead loads are applied. The remaining post- construction settlements should be developed as the live loads are applied. We estimate that the differential settlements should be approximately one -half inch over a span of approximately fifty (50) feet. As it is not possible to observe the completed pile below the ground surface, judgement and experience must be used as the basis for determining the acceptability of a pile. Therefore, we recommend that all piles be installed under the full -time observation of a representative of ECI. This will allow us to fully evaluate the contractor's operation, collect and interpret the installation data, and verify bearing stratum elevations. Furthermore, we will be able to assess the implications of variations from normal procedures with respect to the design criteria. Based on the density of the soil below the water table, it is our opinion the potential for liquefaction over the site during a seismic event is negligible. LIMITATIONS Our recommendations and conclusions are based on our review of the referenced report, the design information provided us, and our experience and engineering judgement. The conclusions and recommendations are professional opinions derived in a manner consistent with that level of care and skill ordinarily exercised by other members of the profession currently practicing under similar conditions in this area. No warranty is expressed or implied. Additional Services As the geotechnical engineer of record, ECI should be retained to perform a general review of the final design and specifications to verify that the earthwork and foundation recommendations have been properly interpreted and implemented in the design and in the construction specifications. This is to observe compliance with the design concepts, specifications or recommendations and to allow design changes in the event subsurface conditions differ from those anticipated prior to the start of construction. We do not accept responsibility for the performance of the foundation or earthwork unless we are retained to review the construction drawings and specifications, and to provide construction observation and testing services.
