Wind or seismic loads applied to the front wall of the enclosure are transferred directly to the foundation and existing structure through bending of the front wall system. The design considers the effects of both wind and seismic loads. The design will be governed by the requirements set forth in Chapter 20 Division II and Appendix Chapter 31 Division III Section 3116 of the 1997 Uniform Building Code. 1. Transfer' of forces: Wind and seismic loads are applied to the wall elements of an enclosure system and then transferred to the roof or foundation through bending of the wall element. In addition, wind and seismic forces can be applied to the roof elements directly exposed area or dead load of the roof system. These forces are transferred to the attachment of at the existing structure. If the applied forces are perpendicular to the attachment, forces in the roof system are transferred through the roof panels as axial forces. These forces are relatively small and are not considered detrimental to the system. If the applied forces are parallel to the attachment, forces in the roof system are transferred through the roof panels as racking shears. The racking shear in the panels themselves is relatively small and not considered detrimental to the panels. Scope of work Our scope of work for this project was to design the patio cover enclosure to carry the design lateral and gravity loads, as determined in accordance with 1997 UBC Appendix Chapter 31 Division Ill and to prepare the construction drawings for the project. Project Description The project consists of the connection of a 12' projection by 13' -8" wide Gable style "Champion patio enclosure" at the rear of an existing one -story home. The site is located in the City of Tukwila, Washington. The lateral load calculations for the structure are presented in the attached roof diaphragm structural calculations prepared by TJC and Associates Inc., (structural engineers) dated September 28, 2000. This document presents lateral load calculations and required connections for a variety of room widths, projections, mullion heights and wind speeds. The results from these calculations are presented in table 1 on page 2 of this package. A review of this table shows that the roof system for the referenced project will act as an adequate diaphragm provided the connection details on page 1 are used. The input values for this table for the Buck residence project are: 12' projection, 10' mullion height and 13' 8" room width. It should be noted that the details on page 1 of the lateral load calculation package are also presented on sheet C -5 of the construction drawings.
