Please let me know if you have any questions or need additional information about any of the following items. I. Intergovernmental Update • Federal Seizure of Motels on Tukwila International Boulevard: On Tuesday, August 27, a year-long Police investigation culminated in the federal seizure of three motels on Tukwila International Boulevard (Travelers Choice Motel, The Boulevard Motel and Great Bear Motor Inn). This multiple agency effort was supported by over 400 personnel including Iaw enforcement officers. Police made 19 arrests in conjunction with the seizure activities, and provided 34 adults and 11 children with temporary housing assistance. U. Staff Updates Public Safety • PD Strategic Planning: The first Strategic Planning Committee meeting has been scheduled for Friday, September 13. Berk Consulting will present the results of the situation assessment they are currently developing. This assessment will provide the information we need to guide the development of our strategic plan. The goal of this first meeting will be to identify 4-5 priority areas that will form the framework of our plan. Project Updates • New Tukwila Library: Staff met with the architect and library representative to discuss design changes to the building in order to comply with BAR criteria. Changes to the building do not appear to be forthcoming and the applicant is instead exploring options on the site that would support the various criteria where the proposal is weak. The applicant was told that a September BAR hearing is unlikely as Tukwila Village is not ready for a September hearing. The site plan for Tukwila Village must be part of the review for the Library and the parking decisions must be made, • Tourism Promotion Area: On August 20 staff hosted an open house for Tukwila hoteliers to receive information on the formation of the tourism promotion area. Staff has offered to meet with hoteliers who were unable to attend the open house. • Parks Staff Work Party: The Parks Crew hosted a work party at Haze!nut Park on August 21. The entire Parks and Recreation Department participated in the one hour work party. Two trees were removed, many trees and shrubs were pruned, landscape beds were cleaned out, ivy was removed and five truckloads of chips were spread. City Administrator Report Page 2 Approximately 30 hours of labor was completed in one hour. This was a great opportunity for Parks and Recreation Department staff to experience a day in the life of the Parks Crew team member. Community Services • Summer 2013 Recap: Summer Day Camp enrollment is up approximately 20% compared to last year. Specialty Camps were new for 2013 and provided kids with a unique experience in a certain interest area each week. A pilot program, "Summer School Fun" consisted of staif Ied physical fitness activities one day per week for over 60 kids in the Summer School program. The response from participants was positive and they didn't want to leave once the program was over. Staff is working with the School District to explore ways to expand the program for next year The Summer Sack Lunch program ended on August 23; between three sites 7,259 unches and 4,685 snacks were served, which is a 23% increase over 2012. • Summer Concerts and Movies Recap: The summer outdoor cinema series wrapped Up on 8/23, with more than 130 people in attendance. Al! the summer movies were well attended this summer. Estimated attendance for the summer was 600 for the free movies at TCC and Foster GoIf Links. This Wednesday is our final Peanut Butter & Jam summer concert. Attendance has been great for these events too, with more than 100 attending each week � GOLF Summer 2013 Recap: Golfers have e joyedQnaetvveatherand|ongeunnydGy8 this golf season, Rounds are up by 6.1% and total revenues are up by 3% or $32,000. The golf course has been in great shape all season, and golfers have offered lot of positive comments. The Foster Ladies and Men's Club have grown in membership and there has been great participation in club events and activities throughout the summer. Course aeration will be delayed as we are predicting a nice September. * Community Activity Nutrition Network: Tukwila is a partner is the Community Activity Nutrition Network whose aim is to tackle childhood obesity in South King. The network is hosting a "Leadership Forum for a Healthier Generation" on September 12 at the Renton Community Center. 111. Responses to Council/Citizen Inquiries • Amplified Noise Response: At the July 22 City Council meeting concerns regarding amplified music near Joseph Foster Memorial Park were expressed. Staff reviewed Tukwila Municipal Code (TMC) Chapter 8.22 and developed a short term solution to inform rental groups of the TMC and ask groups to be respectful of residents; as well as installing temporary signs at picnic shelters posting the TMC regarding amplified noise. Research and preparation for a long term solution is being conducted. • Rainbow Trailer Haven Meeting —3716 S. 152nd Street: {}ode Enforcement, Crime PreveDtiDO, Mayor's Office and Economic Development met with Rainbow Trailer Haven Representatives this week to hear concerns and issues of the park residents. The residents want new rental agreements from the property owner, and they want the property owner to screen new tenants. There are questionable people moving in, there has been an increase in vehicle break-ins and burglaries and they are also concerned about drug activities. Tenants are questioning utility bills, lighting, electrical and plumbing issues. Residents are also concerned about hazard trees, overcrowding, vehicles being stored on the property and fera! cats. The residents at the park have filed a complaint with the State Attorney General's office — Mobile home dispute resolution program, regarding unaddressed issues. 120
