March 20, 1979 Al Pieper, Building Official City of Tukwila 6200 Southcenter Boulevard Tukwila, WA 98188 Dear Mr. Pieper: I have checked the plans for the above construction in accordance with the 1976 edition of the Uniform Building Code and the Washington State requirements for Barrier Free Design. Here are my findings: 1. Code amendments for Barrier Free Design: a. Recessed entry mats are provided at all primary entrances. These should provide a firm, stable, continuous, relatively smooth surface. b. On each floor, one special toilet room is provided for handicapped persons, equipped with a privacy lock, in lieu of one toilet room for each sex. c. LESTER J. GILLIS BUILDING PERMIT CONSULTANT 13560 Sherman Road N.W., Seattle, Washington 98177 (206) 363 -4779 Signage does not appear to be provided for accessible route of travel. Lever handled hardware has not been indicated in hardware specifications. 2 x 4 wood stud bearing walls are shown at stairway enclosure on structural drawings but metal stud walls shown on architectural drawings. 3. Base plates on interior 6" pipe columns should be 7/8" minimum thickness. Sheet S -1. 4. 2 x 6 joists at 12" o.c. are shown in Detail 7 S -7, but 2 x 8 @ 16" o.c. shown on plan S -3. 5. One hour shaft enclosure is required around dumbwaiter. Section 1706 UBC. 6. Divide attic space with draft stops every 9000 sq.ft. as per Section 3205(b) UBC. 7. Per UFC Sec. 10.104(b), "All doors in or leading to exits shall be maintained openable from the inside without the use of a key or any special knowledge or effort at all times when the building or area served thereby is occupied." 2. Per UFC Sec. 10.113, "At every required exit doorway, and wherever otherwise required to clearly indicate the direction of egress, an exit sign with letters at least 6 inches high and readily distinguishable shall be maintained." 3. Walls to be fire stopped per UBC Sec. 2517(f). 4. Where attic spaces are fully sprinklered, attic spaces formed of combustible construction shall be divided into horizontal areas not exceeding 9000 square feet by partitions extending from the ceiling to the roof. 5. Maintain sprinkler protection for all enclosed areas. (Includes under stairs) Extend sprinkler coverage to include all canopies, entry -ways, foyers, etc. which are completely or partially constructed of combustible materials. 6. Hose stations are required per City Ordinance #730. 7. Fire extinguishers shall be provided per NFPA #10, as a minimum requirement. Install six 21/2 gallon pressurized water units and six 2A -10 B:C "All- Purpose" dry - chemical units.
