Begginning - All plans should be finalized and prepared for submission to the local building department and plan approval received. 2. Any world framing or header framing should be 2 inches from the masonry. Since there should be 8 inches of solid masonry around the ELCO, the wood framing should be at least a total of 10 inches from the fireplace. 3. The foundation should be large enough to accomodate the ELCO fireplace with 8 inches of masonry around or more if the fan is mounted inside the masonry next to a flush mount fan cover on the outside. Average foundation depth is approximately 8 inches. Depth does depend on building codes, soil nature and frost conditions. Some building codes call for reinforcing rods set in the foundation and extending up around the fireplace and around the flu liner.for earthquake' protection. 5. If an ash drop is desired, the masonry block fireplace support should be laid on the foundation with a provision for the ash cleanout door near the bottom of the ash drop cavity. 6. The masonry block needs to be set so that when the ELCO is set into position it is at least 12 inches above the floor level in the room. The hearth should be 12 inches high extending at least 16 inches into the room or whatever local building codes provide. 7. Install the hearth or have angle irons for cantelevered hearth into position before setting ELCO on raised support blocks. 8. Be sure the glass front is either removed or protected so that morter can not scratch the finish. 9. Set the ELCO fireplace into position, hook the air duct and electrical conduit up so that they are in position before the rest of the masonry is laid around the unit. Run conduit as required to connect the rheostat variable speed switch, thermostat and blower to electrical power. 10. All electrical conduit runs and electrical wiring must he done strictly in accordance with NEC and all local codes as per the enclosed electrical schematic. THIS MUST BE DONE BY A LICENSED ELECTRICIAN OR ALL WARRENTIES BECOME NULL AND VOID. CAUTION: DO NOT CRUSH CONDUIT. ELCO BUILDERS MODEL MBI - 301 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Continued 11. Surround ELCO with 1 inch fiberglass insulation wrapped around the entire fireplace.to provide an expansion layer between the metal and the masonry. Fiberglass insulation should be a minimum of 1 pound per cu. ft. density. 12. Begin laying masonry block and face brick so that there is at least 8 inches of solid masonry around all the sides, back and front. Face brick or stone can be included as part of the 8 inches of solid masonry. 13. When the masonry has reached the top of the ELCO begin using 12 inch by 12 inch clay flu liner (121 square inches inside) with a 1 inch gap around and then 8 inches of solid masonry or masonry chimney block. (If permitted by local building code or officials, 10 inch insulated or triple wall pipe will work properly) 14. With the 68 inch model use 12 inch by 16 inch clay flu liner with accompanying 8 inch masonry or chimney block around it. 15. The finished chimney must be a minimum of 12 feet above the floor of the firebox to a maximum of 35 feet and in compliance with local building codes for clearance above the roof line etc. 16. At the top of the chimney, install a masonry rain cap or upside down . top to prevent rain falling down the chimney.
