Dear Mr. Darrow:
Tom McGowan asked me to send you the attached literature
on resin tank installation. Viking pumps are handled
your area by Rogers Machinery, 7800 Fifth Avenue South,
Seattle.
You will note that I have included literature on storage .
tank vent driers. These driers remove moisture from air
drawn into the tank when resin•is withdrawn. This pre-
vents condensate forming on the inside walls of the tank.
As you know, moisture affects the properties of polyester
resin. . .
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions..
Very truly yours

CONSIDERATIONS FOR ESTABLISHING BULK POLYESTER STORAGE
Customers occasionally ask us to help them set up a tank so they can receive bulk
deliveries. Following are some considerations.
1. Before doing anything check with the local authorities to see if there are any
restrictions on above ground or underground storage tanks for polyester resins.
Our resins contain Styrene Monomer with a Tag Open Cup flash point of 103
according to Union Carbide. Local authorities could be the Fire Department,
City or County Engineering Department or local APCD.
2. Above ground storage requires an insulated tank and lines, possibly a tank dike
and possibly a lower cost pump since positive suction is not required. Local
Codes may require separation from other buildings.
3. Underground storage requires a tank with an exterior coating of asphalt to protect
the metal. For longtime protection buried anodes are desirable and sometimes re-
quired by local codes. The pump must have positive suction. We recommend and
use Viking Pumps. For detailed information on these pumps talk to Rod Taylor at
L.A. Liquid Handling. He will need to know resin viscosity and required flow in
gallons /minute. We recommend 2" black iron pipe, threaded connections. Above
ground pipe exposed to sunlight should be insulated or at least painted white
to reduce temperature. Underground tanks are less space consuming - requiring
only an area for the pump which should be as close to the tank as possible to
reduce the amount of suction pipe. This pipe should extend to the bottom of the
tank at the low end. The tank should be set low on the suction end so it can be
emptied.
WARNING: DO NOT OPERATE A POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT PUMP WITH CLOSED OUTLET
VALVING. THE HEAT GENERATED WILL GEL THE RESIN AND DAMAGE THE PUMP,
GEARS OR MOTOR.
4. These tanks should be lined with 20 mils minimum of hi build epoxy such as Engard
482 or equivalent and should be tested for voids and completely sealed by the
coater. Tanks may be coated at the manufacturers provided they are not bumped and
damaged on trucking and installation.

5 .: Space for resin truck unload should be provided as close as possible to reduce
the amount of hose and prevent unload demurrage.
It is desirable to pipe so the truck could be unloaded with the resin pump if
necessary. The trucker will need a 2" male or female "Quick Connect" to hook
his unload hose onto.
6. We recommend "Tufline" plug valves with glass filled Teflon plug lining, however
standard black iron gate valves are satisfactory if you are willing to diss-
assemble and clean them periodically.
An inline basket strainer on the suction side of the pump is recommended to
prevent damage to the pump with ingested metal or rocks.
7 . All wiring and switches should be Class 1 Group D including the motor.
