Fire Prevention Bureau November 3, 1977 Per NFPA requirements, extinguishers with a gross weight of 40 pounds or less shall be hung so that the top of the extinguisher is not higher than 6.0 inches above the floor. Extinguishers weighing more than 40 pounds, shall be hung so that the top of the unit is not higher than 42 inches above the floor. Extinguishers shall be located so as to be in plain view (if at all possible). If not in plain view, they shall be identified with a sign stating, "FIRE EXTINGUISHER" with an arrow pointing.
