SPONSOR'S Council confirmation is requested for the newly created position of Director of Information

Two motions are necessary: 1) motion authorizing Mayor to create the position of Director

MEMORANDUM
TO: City Council

SUBJECT: Appointment Confiiiiiation
Director of Infoiniation Technology
In these two months as Mayor, I have already observed many things about the City
organization. Due to annexations in the early 1990s, the City grew by leaps and bounds.
Along with the growth in population, the number of city employees and the duties they
carry out have grown as well. I look forward to making few changes to the
organizational structure of the City, but I believe the changes that I will propose will put
us in a good position for efficiency and growth.
In the interest of efficiency and growth, I believe it is important to consolidate City
communications functions. To that end, I am elevating the position of Inforniation
Technology Manager to that of Department Head effective March 1, 2008, and making
this work group a stand alone depai tiuent. As Mary Miotke has been the overseer of the
growth of technology in the City to date, I believe she is the best person to put forward as
the first Director of Infonniation Technology.
Mary started as a regular employee on March 16, 1993, having been first introduced to
the City through the contractor responsible for our initial computer and software
purchases. During Mary's tenure here, the use of technology has advanced
tremendously, and I have no reason to believe it won't continue to do so under her
capable guidance.
In addition to her hands -on computer experience, Mary has a Bachelor of Science in
Business, emphasis on E- Business (BSBEB).
I look forward to Mary helping to guide us into the future with Information Technology
advances and recommendations.
