WHEREAS, arts education including dance, music, theater, and visual i
arts is an integral part of a complete and balanced education for all students; and

WHEREAS, through well- planned instruction and activities in the arts,

students develop initiative, creative ability, self expression, critical thinking/
problem solving skills, discipline, and a heightened appreciation of beauty and
cross cultural understanding; and
educators, y throughout
C r: WHEREAS educators artists and community members throuhout the State of
l Washington are continuously working to support high- quality arts education, including
our local arts agencies and school boards; and
the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction r=
and the Washington State Legislature have worked to create systematic support for arts
;i: education through policies defining the arts as a core academic subject area; and
L l WHEREAS the Governor of the State of Washington has proclaimed Washington's 6i_
first ever Arts Education Week; and v! it
WHEREAS, The City of Tukwila also supports the broadening and strengthening of
arts education in the State as well as throughout the community; and
f .Z3:, WHEREAS, all members of the Tukwila community are urged to celebrate Arts 5
Education Week and to support efforts to encourage and promote creative and
p interdisciplinary instruction in our learning institutions; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mayor Steven M. Mullet, Mayor of the City of Tukwila, do
