Hall Of Town Council Tukwila was October 4, 1915
Council met in special session for levying an assessment on
the personal and real property in the Town of Tukwila to meet
the expenses of the year 1916. Roll call showed the following
Officers present .Mayor S.H. Stevens. Councilmen Stewart Kasner
and Lutz,Councilmen Walkup and Sandahl being absent.
The Clerk read the budget prepared giving an estimate Of the
expenses for the year 1916 as follows.
Salaries of Officers Clerk $60.00 Treasurer $50.00 Marshall $60.00
Light Superintendent $60.00
Total 230.00 Election expenses $60.00
Street Lighting $125.O0 City Attorney fees for ondemnation
proceedings $10O.00 Street,Sidewalk and Light improvements
$1,285.00 Total $1,570.00 total estimated expenditures $1800.00
Clerk read a communication from the County Assessor in which
he stated the assessed valuation of property in the Town
of Tukwila was $170,819 whioh would make it necessary to
cut down a little on the estimated expenditures for the
coming year discussion arose as to the amount to be levied
Councilman Kasner spoke in favor of a 10 mill slovy as
had been the custom here. Councilman Lutz spoke in favor of
making the levy 7.5 mills so as to conform to the amount
levied outside of Incorporations. A communication from the Public
Welfare League of Tukwila was read asking the council to
make the Levy 7.5 mills. Mr Engel also spoke in favor of
a 7.5 mills levy. Mayor Stevens then addressed the meeting
TImnin n up the different improvements needed new streets
deeded,new viaduct needed, grades for the new Highway to be
built through Tukwila and other improvements that would
necessitate the levying of a 10 mills tax, Mr. Stein the spoke
in favor of a 7.5 mills tax. Councilman Stewart spoke in
favor of a 10 mills tax. Mayor Stevens then read the
Governing the passing of the Ordinance for the tax levy showing
it to be necessary to pass the ordinance at once
so as to notify the County Assessor in the time specified. Ordinance No 50
On motion the Ordinance which was drawn in favor of a 10 Mills
tax levy was ordered read once in full and twice by title
so as to be passed at Once. On roll call Councilmen Kassner and
Stewart voted in favor of the Ordinance and Councilman Lutz
against.After Mayor Stevens explained to Councilman Lutz
that by voting against the Ordinance it could not become
a law he changed his vote in favor of -the Ordinance.
There being no further business the Council adjourned.
The people then as a mass meeting took upp the Light and
Phone questionafter disnussing it pro. a:d con the Clerk was
asked to draw up two petitions,one for lights and one for
telephones and Mr. Durbi n asked to circulate them which
he agreed to do.
