Council met in regular session. On roll call the following were
preaent. Mayor S.H. Stevens, Councilmembers Walkup, Stewart and Lutz.
Councilmember Ives arrived a few minutes later.
Minutes of last meeting read and approved. after being corrected
to read that the Council neglected instead refused to take
action to enforce the Dog License Ordinance:
Reports of Committees
Councilmember Walkup reported he had deeds
from Messrs. Stewart,Pomgreen and Ericson of the land for
a Road from Clarence Avenue to Division Street.
Councilman Stewart reported he had taken up the purchase of the
automatic clock with the head salesman at the Fobes Supply Co.
and the Salesman agreed to write the Superintendent and report findings,
Motion made and carried to place report on file.
Poundmaster Stauffer reported he had impounded two cows and
calves and two yearling calves all of them being redeemed by
their owners for which he had received $3.00
Treasurer reported the receipts of $1,117.52 from taxes and
Pound fees and other revenues $15.25, Disbursements $1,043.29
balance on hand $12'7.74 The following bills were read and ordered
paid. J.L. Durbin salary $5.00 D.W. Stauffer salary $5.00 W.M. Cross
salary Caroline Lutz Hall rent $2.00
A bill from the Puget Sound Electric Railway (PSE) was presented
but owing to mistake in the bill was not ordered paid at this
time but Councilmember Walkup made a motion whis was carried
that the Clerk might later write a warrant for the bill providing
the Co. made a satisfactory explanation of the bill.
Mayor Stevens Presented a communication from the Horticultural
Inspector. After the reading of the communication the Mayor
addressed the audience'in which he stated he had noticed the
orchards were becoming badly infected with insects and he had
written the department of agriculture in regard to the matter.
Mr. Hopkins was called on to speak on the question. He made a very
interesting address in which he described the different insects
and nests infecting the trees, and he also prescribed the best
remedies to use to destroy same
On motion of councilmember Walkup the Clerk was instructed to post
six notices to notify the people of the law governing the
care of orchards and that they must take immediate action in
the matter. Councilmember Lutz called on Mr. Hopkins for an estimate
of the cost to destroy the pests on brush growing in the streets.
He placed the cost at about $20.00
Acting Street Superintendent Walkup was instructed to hire
a man to cut and burn brush infected by pests and make necessary
repairs to sidewalks.
The ordinance for the new Highway through
Tukwila next came up. After being read twice by title it was
passed by a unanimous vote of the Council. Ordinance No 48
A communication from VanDyke & Thomas was read in which they
stated they would collect for the Town of Tukwila from Heine's
disincorporation suit the sume of $95.80 which they would remit
as soon as collected. The deeds for the road from Clarence Avenue
to Division Street next came up for discussion.
Mr. Ericson presented his deed with a guarantee from the Washington
Title Insurance Company which was accepted but the deeds from
Messrs Stewart and Pomgreen was refused until they could have
them insured by some responsible company. Mr. Stewart was instructed
to take the deeds for this purpose and report at the next meeting
and that the Council would pay the sum of $30.00 for the insurance
Motion made and carried to place Ericson's deed in hands of Cier-
till others are acted on.
Bids for sidewalk was opened and read.
There were five bids as follows..
J.R,CrIlliland 4 Ft.walk $160.00 5 Ft.walk $170.00
C.P.Beeson 4 Ft.walk $160.00 additional 30 Ft.and 5 Ft.wide $195.00.
L F Prost 4 Pt. walk $125.00 5. Ft walk $137.50
C.S.Sanders 4.Ft.walk $151.85 additional 30 Ft.$12.00 more.
Frank McDonald 4 Ft.walk $87.47 5 Ft.walk $102.53
Councilmember Walkup motion McDonald bid for 4 ft walk.
Motion lost, Councilmember Ives made motion to accept
McDonald's bid for a 5 Ft. walk with the addition of braces.
Motion lost. Councilmember Lutz spoke on the condition of the road
extending from Tukwila Boulevard to the Pacific Highway ,and stated
the people in that vicinity would volunteer to lay sidewalk
if County Commissioners would furnish lumber.
On motion the Clerk was instructed to write Commissioners asking
them to haul gravel for making a fill there and to furnish
lumber for a walk. Mayor Stevens spoke on having a Tuberculosis
test of cows in Tukwila. Councilmember Ives as chairman of health
and Sanitation was instructed to write or confer with the Board
of Inspectors and report at next meeting.
Councilmember Ives reported there was considerable dirt left in the
road at the Engel Hill and should be removed
There being no further business the Council adjourned to meet
second Tuesday in June.
