Dear Steve,
As you are probably aware, Sound Tr~sit's Central Link Light Rail line is under
cons~uctioM Drive around and you can see const~ction has ~un. ~e most obvious
work is ~e const~ction of the maintenance base just west of the Tully's Roaste~ (old
~inier Beer Brewe~) in SODO. There you see 8 cranes in the sky, dozen of pilings
sunk, ~d ~e pylons which will suppo~ light rail as it heads to the future Beacon Hill
Tunnel. ~emolition has begun on Beacon Hill and construction is unde~ay on MLK Jr.
Way. We haw awarded 13 const~ction contracts for approximately $720 million and
~e 3~ below our estimates.
But there is much work to be done, ~d one of our remainin~ ~sks is to finalize the actual
names of the Central Link s~tions. I am writing you today to invite you to ~ei~h
the names of those stations, if you would like to offer your perspective.
There ~e eleven Central Link stations that will ~nitial[y be built. Several additional
stations ~e deferre~, one of which is the ~oyai Brougham station, included in the list
below. Four stations ~e in the Metro Bus Tunnel~ and Kin~ County, not Sound Transit~
~s responsible for ~eir names: Wesdake, Universi~ Street, Pioneer Squ~e and
International District.
That leaves ei~t Sound Transit Stations to finalize names. The followin~ n~es have
been used for our pmlimin~ pla~ing. We ~e seekin~ input on these names:
Koyal Brou~h~ (this is a defe~ed station)
L~der/5~ Ave s
Beacon Hill
MeClell~R~nier Ave
Columbia Ci~/Edmunds
~hello/~LK ~r Way S
Hende~o~MLK ~r Way 8

Some suggestions which have already been offered include:
Royal Brougham Stadium (s)
Lander SODO
McClellan Mt Baker / Rainier Ave

The general requirements identified by the Sound Transit Board for the naming of our facilities are as
follows:
1. Station names must reflect the nature of their environment such as landmarks, and street names plus
geographical location.
2. Station names will be brief and easy to read.
3. Station names must adhere to the 30 characters per name standard to ~nsure compliance with the
Americans with Disabilities Act.
4. Commercial names should be avoided because names can change and prove confusing to the public
and costly. (i.e. Enron Field in Houston)
Any suggestions? Please forward any suggestions, along with your name and comments to:

Comments are due by August 20, 2004. Sound Transit will communicate any proposed changes prior to
the final decision. Final selections will be made by the Sound Transit Board of Directors next spring.
Sound Transit is excited about taking this next step toward completion of Central Link. As always, we
appreciate your contribution to advancing the construction program.
Sincerely,

For other Sound Transit facilities, Sound Transit uses the station name
as well as a secondary name that serves as further direction to the
facility. The secondary name shows in subscript beneath the station's
official name on the main entrance signs as well as being used in print
and on the web. However, the secondary name will not be seen on platform
signs seen from the trains.
A few ST examples: Overlake Transit Center/NE 40th; Lynnwood Transit
Center/46th Ave W; Theatre District/S. 9th. (there isn't a slash - I've
just used that to separate the primary name from the secondary).
Additional notes:
ST's Sounder station is called "Tukwila Station"
ST is planning a light reil station at the airport, which would
Steve Lancaster - FYI: Station Naming Page 2
be accessed from Int'l Blvd.
Station names are limited to 30 characters
ST's naming convention is to avoid using commercial names
Let me know how it goes. Thanks again, Ann
