PERM GARD j 1845
Interior Latex Vapor Barrier
pROougnIATA
AvA(L t3L LN:
BASES: None
COLORS: 1845 White
DESCRIPTION: Perm Gard t 64 is a latex primer /sealer de•
signedto be used as a vapor barrier (moisture retarder) on interior
Walls and ceilings that come in contact with the outside unheated
air space.
Perm Gard is a perm rated product with a perm rating that does
not exceed 1.0 perm, when applied at recommended film thick-
ness. The Federal Housing Administration and other agencies
have set an acceptable standard for a vapor barrier coating at a
perm reading of lase than 1.0 perm. Perm Gard was tested by an
independent testing Laboratory in accordance to the American
Society for Testing Materials Standard E96.80 Procedure A.
Perm Gerd is designed to reduce the amount of water vapor
(molsture)transmitted through the wallboard of ceilings and walla
to the polyethylene sheeting or into the stud space, thereby
keeping the water vapor (moisture) from condensing And saturat-
ing the wallboard and/orthe insulation and wood siding. Moisture -
filled voids in the insulation can reduce its insulation R value and
add to heat loss, wood rot, and possible exterior paint failure.
NOT RECOMMENDED FOR: Exterior application. bare wood,
metal, hot plaster, enameled or cold surfaces (below 50• F).
SURFACE PREPARATION: Before applying, read and follow all
directions and cautions on the container label. The surfaces to be
painted must be sound, clean, dry and tree of dust, saw dust, dirt,
oils, chalk, mildew, organic matter, or any other contamination
that can affect the paint film.
Some of the gypsum type wallboards (sheetrock, drywall, etc.)
bding used exhibit a different rate of absorption between the
board f ace paper end the Joint compound. An undiluted, high
quality, lowporosity wallboard primer that will equalize the porosi-
ties of the Joint compound widths gypsum wallboard su rtace must
be used (Parker's 1943 Pro Prime).
When repainting walls and ceilings, clean surfaces thoroughly,
remove any loose or peeling paint, sand glossy areas and
prlrnewlth appropriate primer. Repair cracks, nail holes and any
other surface imperfections with a spackling compound or like
filler and allow to dry. Sand lightly if needed and spot prime with
Perm Gard.
The moisture content of the substrate to be painted ehould not
exceed 15% as determined by a moisture meter. New plaster,
concrete and masonry substrates must be thoroughly dry and
eured. Allow at feast 28 days minimum in good weather with
plenty of air circulation and ventilation to help reduce the moisture
and alkali to an acceptable level, Caution should be taken If a
flammable product ifs used for cleaning.
For special painting p' tocedures ask • PARKER PAINT represen-
tative for additional inetructions,

Coverage will depend on the method of application, porosity and
texture of the surface. If coverage exceeds 300 sq, ft. per gallon,
the vapor barrier properties will not be achieved. Two coats of
Perm Gard may be necessary on very porous or heavily textured
surfaces to ache)ve the dry mil thickness needed for the perm
rating..
It is Important that the primer be applied thick enough to thor-
oughly cover the substrate to provide the best possible protection.

The 2x4 studs within the mansard roof wall and under the 4x4 rafters are not intended to be
doubled up. This stud wall (refer to Section 2) is 2x4's at 16" o.c.
The MB' refered to in Section 2 are machine bolts. These bolts are intended to be A307 and
through bolted through the blocking.
In reference to the (2) 2x4 ledgers shown in Section 2, one is a ledger and the other is blocking
between the 4x4 rafters. The 4x4 rafters sit upon the 2x4 ledger and are anchored from uplift
with the specified hurricane clips.

The hurricane ties to be used on the 4x4 roof rafters may be either "H2.5" or "H5" ties, may be
bent to adapt to the angled blocking, and according to the Engineer and counter to what Section 1
indicates, these ties need to be used on only one side of the rafter, The choice of which tie to use
is left to the contractor depending on which tie is easier to bend. The Engine,r's intent is to use a
tie with a long enough lower leg to nail into the 2x rim joist and not the plywood endgrain. Nails
entering at the level of the plywood endgrain should be driven down to the rim joist.
The "HCP4" ties are OK to use as ties for both inside and outside corners and may be bent as
required
