V8101 Mr. Jim Light Foundations for Proposed Custom Furniture Warehouse Project, Tukwila, Washington At the request of the Harold Hill Construction Company we have reviewed subsurface information obtained recently for the Custom Furniture warehouse project, Tukwila Washington. We present herewith a preliminary report of our findings and conclusions. Site Deseri tp in The project site is low -lying alluvial ground oca Ce ietween the on -ramp for Interstate Highway 5 and the Dhwamish river. Summa 3 - of Soil Conditions Three test borings have been drilled i n t the past t re weeks, aisclosing a soil formation consisting of alluvial deposits of the Duwamish River. Four principal soil units have been encountered and are described as follows: 1. An upper unit of top soil approximately 18. inches in thickness. 2. An underlying unit of loose silty fine sand ranging in thickness from 5 to 9 ft. 3. An underlying unit of soft organic silt and /or clay ranging in thickness from 4 to 1 ft. 4. The lowermost unit encountered consists of a dark gray medium coarse sand in a dense state. It was encountered to the maximum explored depth of 34 ft below existing grade. floor plan site plan fixture schedule floor plan floor plan T01 ENO OF VIM LL AT TOP OF .'i SLOPE - -- EXISTING. The upper 5 to 10 ft of the soil formation (below the existing top soil layer is of low compressibility and low -to- moderate shear strength. It may be relied upon for support of moderate structural loaq.s by means of spread footings. 2. Bearing pressures of 2000 paf may be used for spread footings within the silty fine sand unit. These should be placed as high as possible within the silty fine sand unit or in compacted granular fill, as construction circumstances may dictate. Strip footings should be designed for a minimum width of 24 inches. 3. The soil formation which underlies the silty fine sand is of low shear strength and moderate compressibility and will undergo settlement estimated at 3 to 5 inches under the loads proposed for car deck fill and live loading of the warehouse, 4. Settlement following construction of the building can be greatly reduced by application of a surcharge loading prior to and during building construction. A number of alternative schemes are presently being studied for this purpose; the results will be forwarded to you upon completion. We shall be pleased to provide such additional information or advice as you may require in completing foundation design. Our final report containing geologic sections and specific alternative schemes for surcharging of the building area will be forwarded within the next wee NHT:acm cc: Harold Hill Const. Co.
