The issuance of a permit or approval of plans, specifications, and computations shall not be construed to be a permit for, or an approval of, any violation of any of the provisions of the building code or of any other ordinance of the jurisdiction. (UBC 1003.3.1.5) 14: Exit doors shall be openable from the inside without the use of a key or any special knowledge or effort. Exit doors shall not be locked, chained, bolted, barred, latched or otherwise rendered unusable. All locking devices shall be of an approved type. (UFC 1207.3) 15: Obstructions, including storage, shall not be placed in the required width of an exit, except projections as permitted by the Building Code. The building is one story in height and constructed of concrete block masonry exterior walls with a wood frame roof structure. The North wall where the proposed new door is to be located currently has no openings and is 100 -feet in length. The center of the new door is to be located approximately 22' -6" from the West end of the North wall. It is estimated that the new rough opening will be 3' -4" in width and 7' -2" in height. The North wall acts as a shear wall for the structure in resisting lateral forces from either a wind or seismic event. From inspection however, this new opening will not adversely affect the shear capacity of the North wall to carry its intended loads. From the attached calculations you will see that I have considered two approaches to structurally accommodate this new wall opening. The first approach was to assume that the existing wall is reinforced with minimum reinforcing steel as required by the Uniform Building Code for many years. I have assumed for the 8 -inch wall reinforcing as follows: 1 - #4 vertical spaced at 32 "O.C. and horizontal bond beams spaced vertically at 48 "O.C. The bond beams will be reinforced with 2 - #5 continuous. Based upon this assumption the only additional support required is a steel 5 "X31 /2 "angle header angle on the inside face of the wall. See page l lof 11 in the attached calculations.
