This is an accessory and not a structural element of the building. The channel will be primarily under shear load with the load transferred to the concrete through the leg of the 8 inch channel. The are short 5/8 inch rebar rods welded to the channel for the purpose of insuring that the channel does not lose bond with the concrete and that the shear surface. ,remains in contact with the concrete. These rebar rods were spot welded to the channel in such a manner that they could break free and thus the shear surface may not be maintained. : After discussing this with the field inspector, Mr.Russell Bodge of PacificTesttng:,? Laboratories, we determined and I concur that the rebar rods should be rewelded ita :: channel in accordance with ASTM D 1.4 using . 90XX electrodes. The rebar rods should 4be welded at 48 Inch centers as the 8 inch channel would easily span that far. The Weld • could be 1/8 inch fillet around 360 : If there are any questions or clarifications please contact me. Our scope of work for this study 1 included the drilling of a single test boring with a hollow stem power auger, at a location immediately adjacent to the northeasterly end of the existing structure, along with the acquisition of a single 12 -inch diameter concrete core from the slab on grade floor, in the area of the proposed building addition, Based upon these studies we have developed options for the construction of a dock height floor for the northeasterly portion of the existing building. This study has been completed in general accordance with our scope of work letter dated 23 September 1991. This report has been prepared for the exclusive use of your office and your agents for specific application to this project in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering practices. Site Description The subject site is located on the northwesterly side of 48th Avenue South, immediately south of the Duwamish River in Tukwila, Washington. The existing facility is a metal frame, metal roof truck terminal, currently occupied by Oregon Freightways. The bulk of the building was originally constructed with a dock height floor slab. The most northeasterly portion of the structure however was constructed with a slab on grade floor. In this area the steel building framework is supported by concrete columns which in turn appear to be supported by shallow spread footings. - :1.. ;F. . ., 1.4;: ( Burr and Temkin 31 October 1991 W-7848-1 Page 2 Subsurface Conditions In order to evaluate subsurface soil conditions for the proposed addition a single hollow stem auger boring was drilled in the area immediately adjacent to the existing building. The boring was advanced to a depth of 35 feet. Sampling was performed primarily by the Standard Penetration Test Method. This involves driving a standard 2 -inch outside diameter split barrel sampler a distance of 18 inches into the soil with a 140 pound hammer free falling a distance of 30 inches. The number of blows for each 5 -inch interval is recorded. The number of blows required to drive the sampler the final 12 inches is considered the Standard Penetration Resistance (N) or blow count. The blow count is presented graphically on the boring log, included in the appendix to this report. The resistance or "N" value provides a measure of the relative density of granular soils or the relative consistency of cohesive soil. Soil samples obtained from the split barrel sampler were classified in the field and representative portions placed into water -tight containers. The samples were then transported to our laboratory for further visual classification and appropriate testing. Samples are generally saved for a period of 30 days unless special arrangements are made. Boring logs presented with this report are based on the drilling action, inspection of the samples secured, laboratory results and the field Togs. The various types of soils are indicated as well as the depths where the soils or characteristics of the soils change. It should be noted that these changes may have been gradual and if the changes occurred between sample intervals, the locations were interpreted. In addition to the boring, a single 12 -inch diameter core was removed from the floor slab in order to permit measurement of the thickness of the concrete and in an attempt to identify the nature and distribution of any reinforcement in the slab. The ekistirag,:,coricrete :slab on grade floor has a somewhat variable thickness ranging from approximately= ;Tat& 8,s inches f1 > depth at& ourx core ,hole looation. The only steel reinforcement visible in the core was a single, approximately half inch diameter bar. It appears that at least in the area where our core hole was drilled, steel reinforcing bars were set on a spacing of 12 inches or more, center to center.. .Burr and Temkin 31 October 1991 W-7848-1 :age:, Beneath the floor slab the ground appeared to consist of a gravelly sand in a medium dense condition. At our auger boring location we encountered a surficial, medium dense sand which graded downward into a loose sand and silty fine sand to the total depth penetrated by the boring. During drilling, groundwater was encountered at a depth of approximately 12 feet below the ground surface, based upon the presence of moisture in the boring. Because of the generally loose and cohesionless condition of the soils below the water table, drilling encountered a heave problem during which soil would tend to rise upward inside the auger. This is a typical condition in borings drilled below water table, in loose, fine sand strata. Design Considerations Due to the generally loose condition of the site soils, filling for support of a dock height floor slab will induce post construction settlements, both of the new floor system and the building and adjacent dock height areas. Based upon our calculations we anticipate that installation of a fill for support of a dock height floor slab will induce settlements on the order of 2 to 3 inches. Settlements of this magnitude would adversely effect both the existing metal frame structure and the present dock' height floor. In order to minimize post construction settlements, it therefore appears that an elevated, structural floor system would be more appropriate. Shallow conventional spread footings supported by the near surface site soils may be designed with a maximum allowable bearing pressure of 1,000 pounds per square foot (psf), including both dead and live loads.
