Re: Volume Shoes P.I., Plan Review #B92 -0188
Dear Mr. McNeill:
Initial review of the proposed space plan for Volume Shoes
indicates that additional information is necessary to show
compliance with Ordinance.
1. The sales area serves a calculated occupant load > 50.
Two exits are required to serve this area. The plan shows
one at Mall entrance and one to the rear of store and
through a stockroom. A required exit may not go through a
storage area or stockroom. Please revise space plan to show
a second exit for the sales floor.
Please respond with two copies of any revised plans or
additional information developed. If you have any
questions, you may call the Permit Center weekdays between
the hours of 8:30 am and 5:00 pm.

Extinguishers shall be installed on the hangers or in
the brackets supplied, mounted in cabinets, or set on

that the top of the extinguisher is not more than 5
feet above the floor. (NFPA 10, 1 -6.9)
Extinguishers shall be located so as to be in plain
view (if at all possible), or if not in plain view,
they shall be identified with a sign stating, "Fire
Extinguisher ", with an arrow pointing to the unit.
(NFPA 10, 1 -6.3) (UFC 10.505A)
Clear access to fire extinguishers is required at all
times. They may not be hidden or obstructed. (NFPA
10, 1 -6.5)
All extinguishers shall be recharged'after use or when
an inspection reveals that the extinguisher is
damaged, impaired, leaking, under or overcharged or
has obvious corrosion. (NFPA 10, 4 -3.3, 4 -5.1) (UFC
10.504A)

applied with notched trowel to the dampened concrete
substrate, the ridges formed in the mortar will not flow or
slump.

CARPET INSTALLATION
INSTALLATION OF PAYLESS SHOESOURCE CARPETS W1TH ENHANCER Ill+
Installation of Payless ShoeScurce Carpet with
backings can be achieved using conventional
installation tools and methods common to attached
cushion carpets. Installation of carpets with
Enhancer Plus may sometimes require installation
methods unique to that product. All the Enhor er backed
carpets can be easily installed using the outlined
methods of installation,
1. FLOOR PREPARATION
(A) Before beginning installation, the floor should
be f: eo of dirt, oil, paint or other debris
which could possibly impair adhesion of carpet
to the floor. All depressions, crocks, or
protrusions should be patched or leveled.
(B) New concrete slabs or existing slabs on or below
grade should be tested for moisture and
alkalinity prior to beginning installation.
Concrete with pH levels of 9 or above must be
rinsed with a solution of one part muriotic acid
to ten ports water. This should bring the pH
level down to an acceptable point which would
not impair the adhesive. The concrete slab
should also be checked for moisture at several
locations. A vinyl backed car mat or inverted
water glass taped down with duct tope and
allowed to remain in place for 24 hours should
trap condensation from the slab, it if is
(
present. A hygrometer (moisture meter) can be
used to give a more irnmedicte reading. If
moisture is present, the General Contractor or
Building Owner should be advised and a
determination made if installation is to
continue.
(C) Installation should not begin if the room or
slab temperature is below 65 °. Adhesive applied
to an extremely cold slab will dry without
developing adequate bonding properties.
2. ADHESIVES
(A) Shaw Industries guarantees the instollation of
"Enhancer 1114." backing only when Subset -1000
Premium Multi Purpose Adhesive is used in
accordance with the application instructions
printed on each container, a 3/32 x 3/32 "V"
notch trowel must be used for the adhesive
application.
Enhancer Plus can be installed with Subset -2000
Pressure Sensitive Adeehive in areas where
access to trench headers is required. However,
Subset -1000 Multi Purpose Adhesive should be
used in other areas of the installation where
there is no need of access under the carpet.
Again, the adhesive should be applied in
accordance with instructions printed on the
adhesive container.
(
3. SEAM_ SEALER
(A) The "Enhancer" Edge Ravel Warranty will be in
effect only when the seams have been roperly
sealed with Subset -4000 Seam Sealer. Tee Edge
Ravel Warranty on all Enhancer products is based
upon proper seam sealing techniques having been
used. When two cut widths of carpet ore brought
together the seam sealer rejoins the primary
backing and will prevent seam fraying or yarn
zippering out at seams. The seam sealer must be
applied at the level of the primary backing (the
backing into which the yarn is inserted).
The seam sealer cannot be applied along the
floor and pushed up between the widths of
carpet. The cut edge of the cushion will absorb
the seam sealer and prevent proper bonding.
A cushion back seam sealer bottle can be used to
simplify application of the seam sealer and to
assure placement of the seam sealer at the
proper level. The cushion back seam sealer can
be adjusted to change the level of placement of
the seam sealer as required.
4. CUTTING AND SEAMING TECHNIQUES
(A) Corpets with attached cushions shoula be cut in
a manner which will not require compression of
the carpet and backing at seams. For that
reason the trace cutting method is suggested for
all Enhancer backed carpets.
All knives or cutters shouid be kept sharp to
assure the smoothest possible cut. edge. If
possible, cuts should be made with the blade
beveled slightly into the attached cushion to
ovoid fullness at seams.
(C) It is extremely important that the carpet be cut
back appproximately 8 to 10 rows on each side of
the width. This is to assure consistent
thickness of the attached cushion. If the
attached cushion is not level after cutting, as
suggested, Show Industries's Technical Services
Department should be contacted for further
instructions.
(B)
(D) (Side A) Prepare the first side of the carpet
for seaming by cutting with a Roberts #10 -146
Cushion back cutter 1 to 1-1/2 inch from the
edge removing the accent yarn row, leaving only
the background color row to be butted against
the area to be seamed.
(E) (Side B) Prepare the outer piece to be seamed by
sliding this breadth of carpet 1 to 1-1/2 inches
under the first breadth, and trace cut along
side (a) with a Roberts #10- -146 cushion back
cutter. Repeat this procedure for as many seams
as needed.
Please Note: You must seal the cut edge e i. all
transition points, This edge should be sealed
in the some manner as any seam at the primary
back not the cushion.

Enhancer 111+ 5. CENERAL COMMENTS AND OBSERVATIONS
(A)
(8)
(C)
Payless ShoeShoe Enhancer Plus Backing should be
roiled with o roller not to exceed 75 pounds.
ti the time constraints of individual
installation vary, it should be noted that
laying the Enhancer backing into wet adhesive ,
which has not developed tack is not desirable.
The normal evaporative process oy which the
soieents and liquids i,n the adhesive dry is
blocked and seams may resist laying fiat while
the wet adhesive slowly dries. Thu carpet
t:hou,d not be exposed to heavy rolling traffic
for 24 hours after instollation to allow the
adhesive to dry. Heavy rolling traffic or
furniture movement over the carpet immediately
ofter installation can cause problems with
bubbling. If furniture movement Is required
within 24 hours of installation then plywood or
masonite sheets should be placed across seams
and in the main traffic areas during furniture
m ovem en t.
