FIRE IN TUKWILA
SUBJECT:
Date: Friday, February 28, 2014
Time: 9:37 AM
Tukwila Fire Investigators have determined the cause of yesterdays shed
fire. “Combustible materials too close to a portable heater” is the official
cause.
We want to take this time, (especially as we go into another cold weekend)
to remind our citizens the danger of combustible materials near heaters. Be
sure to have adequate clearance around your fireplaces and other heating
devices. If the material is getting “hot”, it is a good indication the heater is
too close!
Also check your portable heaters to make sure it is equipped with a “Tip
Over Switch”. This switch automatically turns the heater off if it is tipped
over for any reason.
We hope everyone has a safe weekend.
This morning just before 6am, Tukwila Fire Department firefighters responded to a reported shed fire in the
th
4400 block of S.160 Street. Tukwila was assisted by SeaTac/Kent Fire Departments.
First arriving unit reported a large column of smoke. Crews discovered two sheds, approximately 20’ by
12’ fully involved in fire.
Firefighters from Tukwila and Kent did a quick and strategic attack on the fire, putting a good stop on the
fire, and keeping it from spreading to other nearby structures, including two houses.
The property was occupied by two adults. One of the occupants suffered minor burns to his hands as he
attempted to put the fire out. Crews quickly confirmed no one was in the shed. One dog was in one of the
sheds, and unfortunately was not able to get out. He expired on scene.
Investigators are on scene now investigating the cause of the fire. The exact cause has not yet been
determined.
Two sheds were involved. They and the contents are a total loss. Dollar loss is still being figured.
With the exception of the burn injury to one of the occupants, no other firefighters or civilians were injured.
