This configuration provides assistance to the person who may use crutches, a walker, or leg brace, or who may have difficulty in rising. The height of the water closet is established to allow for level horizontal transfer from the average size wheelchair. The most common method is a lateral transfer from the wheelchair to the water closet. This is accomplished by removing the arm of the chair and sliding across, and requires sufficient space for positioning the chair to the side of the water closet. 48 ACCESSIBILITY DESIGN FOR ALL Since there are many transfer techniques, it is necessary to provide space to allow for the wheel- chair to take various positions adjacent to the water closet (see illustration, below). Grab bars must be placed properly. so as to accom- modate as many individual requirements as possible. Wall- mounted grab bars are necessary, to avoid the obstructions created by floor - mounted grab bars. A swing -away grab bar on the wide side of the water closet may be added, to provide additional options. The compartment must be large enough to allow the wheelchair to turn so that the user may approach the water closet from a variety of positions. and close the door. Dispensers must be mounted within the reach of seated persons. and should not violate the required unobstructed space. There should be lever- or loop -type pulls on each side of the compartment door. A lower coat hook and small shelf are recommended. A clear floor space measuring 30 inches (760 mm) in width by 48 inches (1220 mm) in depth shall be provided in front of urinals to allow for forward approach. Urinal shields shall have a clear space between them of not less than 29 inches (737 mm) and shall not extend farther than the front edge of the urinal rim. Urinals shall be stall -type or wall -hung with an elongated rim at a maximum of 17 inches (430 mm) above the floor.
