Z October 30, 2001 PLLC City of Tukwila Department of Commercial Development 6300 Southcenter Blvd. Tukwila, WA 98188 Do/ Attn: Dave Larson Building Inspector Re: Lewis and Clark Bowl — Repair of Glued Laminated Arches Dear Dave, JAN 0 4 200 coil/144w - CT Engineering PLLC designed the repairs to the Lewis and Clark Bowl located at 15820 International Boulevard in Tukwila. The glued laminated arches suffered from decay to the point that the structure was in jeopardy. The unique nature of this project required our close contact with the contractor as the work progressed and the full extent of the decay became known. At your request we provided Structural Observation as defined in Section 1702 of the Code. We have visited the project at the significant structural stages and at completion of the structural system. We have visually observed the structural system for conformance to the approved plans. Observed deficiencies have been reported to the owner's representative, the building official and the contractor in the form of Bulletins. More specifically, we examined the extent of removal of the decayed portion of the wood and assisted the contractor with designs for additional temporary shoring once it became clear that some of the arch sections were significantly more decayed than our initial survey indicated. We approved the epoxy materials used in the repair and periodically witnessed the installation of the borate preservative rods in the wood portions that remained. The concrete masonry beneath the glued laminated arches does not support the weight of the arch and we approved the additional removal so as to permit installation of new arch segments. We designed custom purlin connections that avoided the need to remove the roof membrane. Inspection of the limited amount of welding was inspected by the Special Inspector. We have examined the completed structural system and in our opinion all observed and reported deficiencies have been resolved to the best of our knowledge. Please call me if there are any questions with respect to this letter. These arch ends will require additional reinforcing per sketch CT2.1. The steel PL % x 11 is incorporated into this detail and required top and bottom. ♦ At Arch 9 (east end wall) additional decay was observed in the middle of the beam penetrating almost to the inside of the building. The concern is that the wind columns will not effectively transfer their shear to the roof diaphragm. We recommend "kickers" be installed to connect the top of the steel posts to the roof per CT2.2. In addition, verify that the wood in Arch 9 is free of decay and capable of transmitting vertical bearing load to the column. If this is not the case, remove the decayed portions one column at a time and replace with epoxy material. ♦ At Arch 9, a new GL arch segment is to be fabricated and installed per details pertaining to Arches 6 and 8. Shoring is not required provided the wind column bearing points are free of decay or repaired with epoxy filler. ♦ The new arch sections to be installed at Arches 6, 8 and 9 are to be fitted with Impel rods per typical details and flashed for protection from weather and sunlight. It may be simpler and cheaper to sister another purlin adjacent to the exisitng and ° ~ connect to the two adjacent arches the same way the existing purlins are connected. 0 ♦ Installation of the Impel rods may stop as close as practical to the exterior face of the CMU wall z provided no new decayed portions are discovered there. ♦ Where the arches are close to a CMU wall parallel to the arch, the Impel rods may be drilled from one side only, drilling per recommendations on sheet S3. ♦ Portions of the CMU wall may be removed directly below the arch if necessary for construction access. Receipt No: Date: NOTICE: IF THE DOCUMENT IN THIS FRAME IS LESS CLEAR THAN THIS NOTICE IT IS DUE TO THE QUALITY OF THE DOCUMENT. MEMO FOR RECORD DATE: 5/24/01 FROM: Duane Griffin, Bldg Offl Subject: Lewis & Clark Bowling Alley I talked to Jason Horning, 425- 455 -8169, Property Manager, on 5/22/01 regarding the status of the building. He said the bowling alley is moving out immediately and the owner of the property isn't sure what they are going to do yet. Jason said they were talking to their insurance company to see if they could get insurance on the building. He said there is a possibility they might demolish the building, depending on what the insurance company says, and some other factors. I told him that I was calling to make sure that the building was going to remain vacant until engineered repairs have been permitted and completed. He said he understood that. He said that they have had an engineer evaluate the damage and the engineer had thinks the glu -lamb arch beam, shown on the attached picture that is damaged at the top, can possibly be repaired by routing out the damage and filling with epoxy. Horning said the engineer said that the structure was originally overbuilt structurally and he doesn't think there is danger of immediate collapse. I will follow up in about 45 days to see if anything has been resolved. I talked to Steve Kohler, Fire Marshal, this date, about this subject and he said the fire dept is aware of this situation and they have the building classified as one not to enter in case of fire. ;..:... a1 .u.i..:iaw.iie...lapk;JiLd::.: i':,,3afii. if . , ..f4a; ' c m1 T Q w Plan and Notes Emeregen Repair of Lewis and Clark Bowling Alley 15820 Tukwila International Boulevard Seattle, Washington . NO.
