MANUAL (COMPACTING) SYSTEM
Manual Compacting systems always have three components, plus options.

End Panel and stationary carriage quotes are provided upon request. A manual compacting carriage
and track will add 3" to the height of the shelving.
TRACK
Pipp's systems require a track under every set of uprights. If a shelving section measures greater
than 60 ", a center row of track will be required. Two basic decisions must be made when selecting a
track.
1. Adjustable, non - adjustable or heavy-duty track
2. Flat underlayment or carpet underlayment
Leveling beyond 318" may require floor modifications. This determination has to be made before
installation begins. Two alternatives exist when leveling requirements are needed before the track is
installed.
1. Usage of aluminum shims
2. Grout under the track
All tracks are shipped with underlayment (a "U "- shaped filler plate which fits under the track).
Underlayment provides a surface for adjustment screws to push against while adjusting the track.
Underlayment is provided in one of two configurations, and must be specified at time of order.
Flat underlayment is used on hard surfaces, such as wood, tile and concrete, PHFT is offerqd with flat

This carpet underlayment stabilizes the track on carpet by transferring the load through the carpet
into the floor below, Pipp systems work well on commercial grade or low nap carpet, High nap or plush
carpets should be removed under the entire system. Adjusting a Pipp system can best be accomplished
when underlayments are in direct contact with the floor.
A) Adjustable track has a t- nut/set screw - leveling feature on either side of the running surface,
spaced at 6" intervals. This allows leveling of the track before, during and after installation of shelving
on the carriage. Adjustment is 1/4 ". (Optional 1/2" set screws are available. The factory does not install
1/2" set screws; they must be installed on site by the installer). The standard 1/4" is a sufficient
adjustment for most systems, eliminating drift and difficult movement. Occasionally, the 1/2" set
screws may be required, interspersed with the 1/4" screws. In more significant cases, greater leveling
may be required. (l.e, footbrakes)
B) Conforming (non - adjustable) track is also available. Non- adjustable track has no built in
feature (i.e. set screws) for leveling. This track should only be used when leveling ability is not required
due to a smooth and level floor (i.e. A raised computer floor), or when carriage drift is not a problem.
C) Pipp (non - adjusting) heavy -duty track has extra strength as a result of steel underlayment.
This track has the ability to bridge dips and irregularities in the floor. Point load specifications for this
track are 1,500 lbs. per wheel or 4,500 lbs, per RDS channel. Carpet underlayment is not available with
heavy -duty track.
Track lengths are determined by adding the total depth of all carriages, aisle(s), growth and end
stops, For example, four 30" carriages, with one 36" aisle, would require track lengths of 14' (32 "+ 32"

bumpers, screw heads, corner plates, etc. When pricing, Pipp rounds fractional track lengths down
to the nearest Inch,

applications are covered under the lateral movement section of the manual. Compacting and RDS
installations follow these guidelines:
1. Carriages up to, and including, 98" in length: One anti -tip rail is required. If there are
center wheels, the anti -tip is required at the center track.
2. Carriages between 98" and 147" in length: Two anti -tip rails are required, one at each
outside track,
3. Carriages longer than 147 ": Three anti -tip rails are required, one at each outside track and
one at the center,
4. 16' - 24' RDS: 4 runs of anti -tip,

MANUAL CARRIAGE
The carriage chart shown below illustrates both length and depth as part of the Pipp model number. For
example, a PC 6024 is a carriage 60" long by 24" deep. Pipp will assume this carriage is for 60" wide
shelving. If the carriage were a PC 7224, we assume you are using two 36" wide shelving sections by
24" deep. The maximum carriage ratio is 6:1 (length of carriage vs. depth). The maximum carriage
length is 16'. However, any carriage over 12', we recommend RDS. For carriages exceeding the 6:1
ratio or maximum length, refer to Section 5 for the Responsive Drive System.
You must designate the carriage configuration with your order. Pipp designs carriages, spacing wheels
and wheel channels so they are positioned under each upright.
For example: a PC 8430 could be configured two ways.

Note; You must include instructions on this spacing when you enter your order.
When ordering carriage(s), dealers must consider the logistics of moving
them to the installation site. Pipp can cut and splice carriages needing
transport through narrow spaces or around sharp corners. It is the
dealer's responsibility to tell us if you expect to have a problem handling
the carriage. Weight is not a factor, since even the largest carriages can
be tilted and easily moved by the average person (or two).
Pipp's Compacting (Manual) Carriages are designed to carry up to 3,500 lbs., which includes
media and shelving. This is not a function of carriage capacity, but is the limit of what can be
comfortably moved on a regular basis throughout the workday. While it is possible to move heavier
weights by hand, it is not recommended.
Pipp's carriage wheel capacity is rated at 850 lbs, per wheel. By counting the number of uprights,
and knowing there must be a wheel under every upright, you can determine the rated capacity of an
individual carriage, For example, a simple 36 x 24 inch carriage has a wheel under every corner for a
total of four wheels. At 850 lbs. per wheel, this carriage is technically rated at 3,400 lbs. (4 x 850 lbs.)

With eight wheels, this system could carry 6,800 lbs. Such a system would call for an RDS assist drive
and should not be specified as a manual system, However, It is possible that a 108" x 30" carriage,
within the office environment, would carry legal records weighing about 2.5- lbs. /filing inch. At seven
levels per filo section, times six sections (three double -sided sections), content weight is approximately
3,600 lbs. Add to this the weight of shelving; at 100 lbs. per section (times 6 sections), then total
carriage weight will be well over 4,000 lbs. when loaded, Although this system is within carriage
capacity, (8 wheels x 850 lbs. /wheel), it requires a RDS assist, especially if it were installed for active
files. Please remember that while the wheels are rated at 850 lbs., the adjustable track is not.

While we assume most carriages are uniformly loaded, you should be aware that we could add extra
wheels at any position in the carriage channel. If the carriage is uniformly loaded (front to back, and end
to end), you can calculate the load on any wheel by sectioning the carriage, as shown below:

Wheel 'A' will carry a quarter of the weight on the first section, as will wheel 'B'. Likewise, wheels `G'
and 'H' will each carry a quarter of the weight of the third section (the one on the right).
Wheels 'C', 'b', 'B', and 'F' will each carry twice the load of wheels 'A', 'B', 'G' and 'H'. If this carriage
were loaded to the maximum, I.e,, carried 10,000 lbs., or 3,300 lbs. per shelving section (both sides),
then wheel 'A' would carry the load over quadrant 1 or 825 lbs. However, wheel 'C' would have to carry
the load of quadrants 2 and 5 or twice the weight of wheel 'A'.
The final carriage feature to be specified is the anti -tip system, This is covered in depth in the anti -tip
section of the manual. As already mentioned under the lateral movement section, anti -tip is always
required with any 2 -deep or 3 -deep lateral applications. However, anti -tip is an option on compacting
systems outside of seismic zones, Anti -tip should be used in the following applications:
1. Always, when the ratio of shelving height to carriage depth is greater than 4:1.
2, Whenever you have doubt about the stability, or safety, of any system,
3. Always, in California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Alaska or any other area within seismic
zones.
4. When shelving is lateral pull out drawers.
Shelving units must always be attached to the carriage, Attachment is done through corner and center
plates, which are pre - drilled for this purpose.

Set carriage in place before attaching Z-rail to floor.
Install the Z -rail so the anti-tip arms extend 1/2" and the lip of the Z -rail.

A fastener must be installed in

Install Stationary Shelving at one end (where applicable).
• If you have a stationary carriage, place shelving unit on top.
• Use stationary shelving to assist in aligning track and moveable carriages.
Troubleshooting Anti -tip
Problem: Carriage rubs on top of Z -rail.
Solution: Adjust anti-tip arm, or if track is adjustable, adjust set
screws.

Confirm all parts to the packing list, before beginning installation.

Align steel track, attach splice plates with
button head screws.
Note: Steel Track End Stops are placed at
the end of the track.
. Remove the cover (E) from the responsive drive box and set aside.
• Align 2 slots near bottom rear of drive box over the two 1/2" -13 bolts (B) extending from the carriage on either side of the drive
sprocket The box is attached to the carriage using the two 1/2" -13 Nylock nuts.
Attach the chain to the middle sprocket. Align the teeth with the chain spaces. The white ABS plastic idlers need to be loosened so the
chain can be easily assembled. The chain cannot be tensioned properly unless it is placed around the white idler arm. Assemble the
master link and the half link if necessary. The chain idler arms need to be tensioned using normal hand pressure. When the idlers are in
the proper location tighten the 2 lock nuts facing you.
Make sure the drive handle shaft moves into the hex shaped hole on the back of the drive box freely. The RDS handle will not lock
unless the shaft will go into the hex shaped hole.
• After the chain is attached and the shaft moves freely, attach the RDS box to the shelving. The drive box accessory bag has several
types of screws and bolts for this purpose. The exact method will need to be determined on site, however, you will need to drill 2 holes
in the back of the RDS box.
. Attach the cover with the 6 color coordinated screws.
• If installing hub key lock, (See INSTALLING HUB KEY LOCK now). The RDS drive handle uses a 3/16" x 1/2" keyway mounted in
the handle shaft to prevent spinning of the handle. There is a groove in the shaft for the keyway to sit. Place the keyway in the shaft
groove (groove facing up). Install the e-clip on the shaft in the groove closest to the handle. Align the handle grooves and slide over the
handle shaft and keyway. Secure the handle using the 1 -1/8 " Nylock nut against the a -clip on the back. Do not over tighten.
. Check for proper operation and install the plastic hub cover over the center handle hole.

1/4" hole /s into the concrete floor deep enough for the End Stop Fastener/

. Confirm joints are still properly seated, and track is straight.
. Drill hole/s for End Stop at opposite end of track.

• After installing the drive box cover, attach the e-clip to the handle shaft.
• Install the key lock assembly through the shaft and connect to the
washer and the button head socket screw.
. Use the spanner wrench to tighten the key lock assembly to the shaft.
. OPERATION:
. To Lock: When the handle is in the blocked position (pushed in), turn
the key counter clockwise, remove key.
. To Unlock: Insert key. Turn key clockwise. Pull the handle out. It is in
the unblocked position. Remove key. The handle can now be turned to
move the carriage.

the appropriate channel at the factory. Arm adjustments
maybe needed based on floor conditions.
• Set carriage in place before attaching Z -rail to floor,
• Install the Z -rail so the anti-tip arms extend 1/2" under
the lip of the Z- rail.
• Using the holes in the Z-rail m a guide, drill a 1/4" hole
into the concrete floor approximately 1 -3/4" deepat both
ends.
• Install the end 1 -1/4" nail -ins or Tapcons.
. Install remaining fasteners every 6 ".

between inside edges for letter size, 10" for
legal size, and 13" for x -my size).
Verify this spacing by placing one of the ma-

seated in the center of each track.
Also, for the carriage to roll freely, the anti-rip
arm must be properly seated under the rail of
the anti-tip system.

Measure the comer to center distance from the
rear channel to the front channel of the carriage.
Using the center to center distance, layout the
second track..
Place one carriage on the track to make sure the
carriage rolls freely, then anchor the track, -
• The lock is supplied mounted to an aluminum plate. Remove screws 1,2,
and 3. There are spacers behind the lock (not shown).
• Install the aluminum plate to the carriage comer (removing top screws,
backing off bottom screws far enough for spacer to slip over them).
• Install the lock. Make sure the spacers are reinstalled.
• Move the carriage: to the track position where you want to lock it.
• Tum the key so that the plunger moves up and down freely.
• Tap on the plunger with a hammer. Drill a 7/16" hole in the track at this
mark.
OPERATION:
• Position plunger over hole
drilled through track.
• Depress plunger.
• Turn key to lock plunger.
NOTE: Secure all shelving to carriages
with installer applied hardware.

Use a 5/32" drill bit ,self- tapping screws and washers.
Unpack panels and confirm bottom location on each. Panel cutouts
align at top of carriage corner plates during installation.
Place the fast panel base on projecting ledge on the carriage. This es-
tablishes the height from the floor for all panels.
Panels should overhang the shelving uprights equally on each side.
• Hold panel in place against upright. Prom shelving side, drill 4 screw
holes no deeper than 1/2" into the panel on each side. NOTE: Choose a'.
location in the narrow bottom of a keyhole slot that is not adjacent to a
groove of the slatwall.
• Assemble the washer just below the screw head insert through the key -.
hole slot and into the panel The washer should be behind -the screw
head and against the metal uptight to prevent the screw head from slip-
ping tluough the keyhole scot: Tighten until the panel is held firmly in
place.
•. Install panels on the stationary units the same height as those installed
on the mobile carriages. The panel should be installed the same height
as those resting on the mobile carriages, then fastened as above.
•. If floor is slightly out of level, panel faces may appeartmeven.. Use
shims under the shelving uprights to tip units until: they are even.
