Commodities shall be classified as Class I, II, III, IV or high hazard in accordance with Section 8101.4.1. Materials listed within each commodity classi- fication are assumed to be unmodified for improved combustibil- ity characteristics. Use of flame- retarding modifiers or the physical form of the material could change the classification. See Section 8101.4.2 for classification of Groups A, B and C plastics. 8101.4.1.2 Class I commodities. I am assuming from your marked sections of the code, that you require both the product, height of product, and level of shelving for the racking. The description follows: All racks will have the lower shelf set at 72" above slab. The second shelf is set at 144" above slab. This will be consistant for all racking units. These racks are used for seasonal storage for the Holiday's. Fireproofed artificial christmas trees will primarily be strored on these racks. These trees have the Christmas strands of lights permanently attached. They are loose stored, upright, which is to say, without being wrapped in plastic. The trees vary from 4 to 7 feet high. There may also be some metal brackets as well as some plaster columns that will share the slab level set on pallets. Nordstrom is contacting the manufacturer of the trees, and will supply a certificate of non- fammability to you, and the City as soon as possible. I trust that the wait for this certificate will not hold up the approval of the racking permit, as we discussed the trees are required to be non - flammable to be put into the stores.
