Business Items
A. Protect Update —The Commission reviewed the Project Update in the Agenda Packet.
B. Event Calendar — The Commission reviewed the Event Calendar in the Agenda Packet.
C. Tukwila Tree & Environment Advisory Committee Update — Don Scanlon provided brief summary that the
Committee will be meeting with the Planning Commission and City Council at a work session next week
(June 24) to share with them the work they have done. Part of that work is establishing a Tree Committee
and whether the Parks Commission could serve as the Tree Committee. After discussion, the consensus
was that the Parks Commission may not be the best match for the Tree Committee although it may make
sense for a representative from the Parks Commission to serve on the Tree Committee.
D. PROS Plan Update — Dave Johnson updated the Commissioners on the status of the PROS Plan process,
including the public engagement and outreach that has occurred. The survey will remain open until the
end of June.
E. Department Update — Staff are quite busy between Summer Programs starting this week and planning for
Fall activities. The Teen Summer Kickoff Festival was held on June 18th at Foster High School and there
were 500+ kids at the event.
F. TMC Review — Commissioners reviewed a draft update of the TMC related to roles of Parks Commission.
Don Scanlon moved to forward the draft update for consideration. Joanne McManus seconded the
motion. The Motion passed unanimously.
G. Parks /Facilities Guide — Commissioners provided staff with their updates the information for the Parks
guide. This information will be combined with staff input to update the Parks /Facilities Guide.
Other
A. Don Scanlon asked about the 2 King County Parks in Tukwila, North Winds Weir and Cecil Moses, and
whether there has been any history or discussion about those transferring to the City. Dave Johnson
noted that he wasn't aware of any but would check on it and provide an update at the next meeting.
B. Don Scanlon noted that at the PROS Plan Community Leader Meeting there was discussion and
misunderstanding about the Golf Course budget and asked for any an update on this. Dave Johnson
noted that an update is forthcoming for the Council, and will include the Parks Commission in this
process. Commissioners shared comments about the positive benefit provided by the Golf Course,
including source of community pride, a "cornerstone of Tukwila ", convenient access, many folks will drop
kids off at Starfire or the Mall and then come down to play golf.
C. Alice Russell asked about the types of programs that we have for children with disabilities, and
encouraged more Tukwila -based opportunities.
Adjournment: Alice Russell moved to adjourn at 6:10pm. The motion was seconded by Joanne McManus. The
motion passed unanimously.
Next Meeting: Wednesday, July 17, 2013
