Refer to Construction Details Section, Page 35 for end lap detail, 8. Use of a mechanical torching wagon In mem- brane application requires careful monitoring of flame positioning to insure uniform flame applica• lion across the entire width of the roll as well as roll alignment. Rolls shall rest fully upon the rool deck to provide adequate pressure for bonding. Laps shall be walked in during roll application. The use of torching wagons during windy conditions is not recommended. 9. Side and end laps should be checked both during application and at the end of each day. Areas which do not exhibit modified bitumen flow at laps require careful examination to determine whether they are fully bonded. Small areas of improperly sealed laps shall be corrected by gently lilting the unsealed area with a trowel, reheating with a small torch and applying an even pressure. Do not attempt to repair laps by torching the lop surface of the membrane. Hot Asphalt Application: FLINTLASTIC' GMS" and GMS /II" Modified Bitumen roll roofing are designed for installation in a solid mopping of asphalt utilizing conventional application tech• niques. Asphalt shall conform to ASTM D312, Type III for applications on slopes up to 3" in 12" and Type IV for applications on slopes exceeding 3" in 12 ". Rooting contractor shall not allow asphalt temperature at point of application to drop below 400°F, or overheat asphalt to compensate for rapid cooling. Over the completed base ply, install one ply of FLINTLASTIC GMS in a solid mopping ol Type III asphalt at the rate of 25 lbs. per 100 square feet. Asphalt shall be applied uniformly across the lull width of the roll including selvage edge of the proceeding course. During roll application, a small amount of asphalt should extend beyond all side and end laps to insure lull lap adherence. GRPC does not endorse "Ilying•in," or "niop and IIo1)" method of application for this product. Rooting contractor shall inspect all laps for lull bonding. Laps requiring repair should be corrected by lift. Ing the unbonded edge and applying heat with a small torch. 8.05 Construction Details: FLINTLASTICO GTSifl ", GMS/II ", STA/MI" arid GTA/ll" Modilied Bitu. men Flashing rolls are specifically designed for use In conjunction with FLINTLASTIC'" GTS ", GMS", STA"' and GTA'" Modified Bitumen membranes. Each product Is one.half the width of its lull roll counterpart and utilizes the same application technique. Prior to (lashing roll installation, vertical concrete or masonry surfaces shall be primed with asphalt primer and allowed to dry. Wood surfaces shall receive one ply of GLASBASE" or ALL WEATHER /EMPIRE" Base Sheet nailed 12" o.c. through tin•discs in all directions. Flashing rolls shall not be attached directly to wood surfaces, Base fleshings shall extend a minimum of 8" above roof deck, nailed 9" o.c. through tin•discs along top edge. Metal flashing details such as pipe fleshings and flashing pans shall have a 4" minimum continu- ous flange. All metal flanges designed to receive FLINTLASTIC flashing rolls shall have a 4" mini- mum width and shall be lightly primed with asphalt primer prior to installation. Refer to Construction Details Section, Pages 31.35 for typical detail instal- lation specifications. 8.06 Coatings and Surfacings: Additional pro- tective and /or reflective coatings and surfacings are not required. All FLINTLASTIC Modified Bitu• men roll roofing products are manufactured to pro- vide superior in place performance without any additional treatments. However, when design requirements call for additional surfacing to satisfy particular aesthetic or fire-resistance properties, GRPC recommends the following general guidelines: Gravel or Slag: Surfacing shall be opaque, clean, moisture not to exceed 2% and conform to ASTM D1863. Gravel or slag shall be 1/4" to %" in size installed in a flood coat of Type III asphalt. Flood coat shall be applied in a uniform mariner at the rate of 60 lbs. per 100 square feet. Gravel and slag shall be applied at the rate of 400 lbs. per 100 square feet with a minimum ol 50% embed •• - • ' • .the Ito Shat. sphalt Emulsions: Surfaces to receive emu sion coaling shall be clean, dry and free of debris, GRPC recommends emulsion Application a mini• mum of 30 days alter installation of roofing mem• brane. Following surface preparation, apply one coat of Genstar STATIC ASPHALT FIBRATED to entire membrane and vertical surfaces at the rate ol 3 gallons per 100 square feet. Emulsion may be applied with a soft fiber brush or spray equip. men!, brushing or spraying towards the laps. When necessary, emulsion may be diluted with no mor han 10% cool, clean water. cry o receive acrylic coating shall be clean, dry and free of debris. GRPC recommends acrylic application a minimum of 30 days after installation of roofing membrane. Acrylic coatings can be applied over an asphalt emulsion coating or, in seine cases, directly to the roofing membrane our lace. Consult the specific product Manufacturer for application and product specifications. Aluminum Coatings: GRPC does not recorn• mend the use of cutback type of aluminum coal• ings as a reflective surfacing for FLINTLASTIC Modified Bitumen Roof Systems. Water based aluminized asphalt emulsions are acceptable when an aluminum reflective coating is required. Appli• cation rates may vary according to product Man. ufacturer, however, GRPC recommends a minimum 3 gallons of aluminized asphalt emulsion per 100 square feet. Consult the product Menu• lecturer for application and product specifications. For best results, GRPC recommends reflective coatings be installed in two uniform applications. When considering Underwriters Laboratories fire rated systems and products, consult UL Building Materials directory for individual listings and sys• tem requirements. GENSTAR ROOFING PROD.
