GL{ t f -N r 7 BEAMS ON ELASTIC FOUNDATION The elementary theory of the bending of a beam on an elastic foundation assumes that the beam is resting on a continuously distributed set of sl„ ings the stiffness of which is defined by a modulus of the foundation k. However, it is rather the exception than the rule that the foundation is actually constituted this way. Generally, the foundation is an elastic continuum characterized by two elastic constants, a modulus of elasticity E and a Poisson's ratio v. Problems of elastically supported beams pertain to beams for which the elastic support is provided by a load - bearing medium distributed continuously along the length of the beams. This load - bearing medium is referred to as foundation. Beams on an elastic foundation have a wide application in many technical problems: shells, thin- walled tubes, domes, and beams, to mention just a few. The elastic foundation in such cases is supplied by the resilience of the adjoining portions of a continuous elastic structure. For example, bending analysis of spherical shells can be reduced to the problem of flexure of elastically supported curved beams where the elastic foundation is repre- sented by the resilience of the hoop elements in the shell. K L = Length of beam (in.) 1 D v f i p;] AL = Stiffness parameter (rad) k= b k, Classification of Beams According to Stiffness An important factor influencing the shape of the elastic line is the factor A = ij(k /4E1). The dimensional unit of A is L -1 , in which L is the dimension of length. Consequently, AL is dimensionless and is usually thought of as being expressed in radians. The AL quantity characterizes the relative stiffness of a beam on an elastic foundation. It determines the magnitude of the curvature of the elastic line and defines the rate of which the effect of a loading force dies out in the form of a damped wave along the length of the beagt. According to these AL values, we may classify beams into three groups: I. Short beams: AL <ir /4 II. Beams of medium length: sr /4 < AL < 7r (Table 4) III. Long beams: AL> ir (Table 5 and Fig. 15) For beams belonging to Group I we can neglect, in most practical problems, the, bending deformation of the beam; this deformation will be so small as to bt; negligible compared with the deformation produced in the foundation. Hence, computing beams of AL< /4, we can assume them to be absolutely rigid; consequently the computation of the deflections is a statically determinate problem. The deflection then may be calculated by assuming a straight -line distribution of the reaction forces from the elastic supports and applying the equations Of equilibrium to the system of forces acting on the beam. Group II comprises the situations in which accurate computation of the beam is necessary. The characteristic of this group is that a force acting at one end of the beam has a finite, and not negligible, effect at the other end. t. CLASSIFICATION OF BEAMS ACCOICOINU lU ay+aaFcvrm 1, Beams belonging to Group III have a AL value such that ti ....,anteeeffsct of the end - conditioning forces on each other is a diminishing one. When investigating one end of the beam, we may assume that the otller end is infinitely far away. Forces applied at one end will have a negligible effect at the other. 1.0 0.8 0.6 0.4 0.2 -0.2 Figure 15 Beam on an Elastic Foundation. • TAI LE 4 EQUATIONS FOR MEDIUM - LENGTH BEAMS* Loading and Case 1. Pittsburgh Testing Laboratory Division REPORT OF INSPECTION SERVICES PROJECT: OUR REPORT NO.: SUMMARY OF INSPECTION 777 Boeing Building 5924 So. 180th 715 - 18011 -1 Spoke with Eric Strand upon arriving at the job site. Went over City of Tukwila requirements for inspection and approved plans. Newly installed shelves were in 10' and 14' sections and the 14' sections were found for the most part to be in compliance, however, on the 10' sections they were not. On speaking with Mr. Strand about the areas of non - compliance, there was some confusion as to what ex- actly was required. This inspector then spoke with BE &C Engineer, Sam Perry, about what was required. Further inspection of 10' sections revealed more areas of non - compliance and this inspector was introduced to Mr. John Heryla, Boeing Supervisor, who said that the 10' sections were exempt from what the City of Tuk- wila and.Sam Perry had, cal, led for. This inspector explained to Mr. Heryla that the engineer needed t:o put:'in'.writirig what was called for before the inspection could be performed. Mr. Heryla then stated he would have Mr. Perry come out and review what the actual conditions were and make a written decision on the situation. Bolts used on the shelves are A307 quick bolts with 4}" embedded into the floor. No high strength bolts have been used. WABO certification of welders and qualified welding procedures were not available at this time. Mr. Strand will have all information needed when he calls for the next inspection.
