Walser AIA, CCS 3W: ae /risk L y . (p3z7 10- 02.231 W34 In response to your request during final inspection, Iam providing the following information 1. The changes in the mezzanine slab thickness from 4 -1/2 inches to 6 inches and the increase in the spacing of the anchor bolts from 24 inches to 18 inches on center were authorized by the structural engineer, Ron Roberts, and myself as architect. This change was made to strengthen the load bearing capabilities of the mezzanine to establish a "conservative" design capacity of 200 lbs. per square foot previously indicated in the design calculations. 2. The 6 -inch masonry partitions enclosing the new weld shop are non load - bearing partitions. Metro's site inspections verified that the reinforcing and materials were in accordance with the Contract Documents. Since these two partitions were not load- bearing walls they did not receive "special" masonry inspection. If this information does not adequately address your concerns regarding the building permit for this project, please give me a call at 684 -1304. Suite WI Bellevue. WA 98004 POO 034820 Sand for masonry mortar should be clean and well - graded. Sands with less than 9 - 15% passing the Nos. 50 And 100 sieves produce coarse mortars possessing poor workability. On the other hand, sands with too many fines yield mortars that are workable but are generally, Low in strength. This would be a sand with 45 55% passing a Nol SO sieve. The typical masonry sand used in the Puget Sound area produces mortar with the anticipated properties even though the sand doesn't totally meet the gradation limits of ASTM C-144. This sand does not have the problem Of being too fine or too course as described above and• should be acceptable under normal conditions. ASTM C -144 does recognise this situation and states: "when an aggregate fails the gradation limits specified, it may be used provided the mortar can be prepared to comply with the aggregate ratio, water retention, and compressive strength requirements of the property specifications of specification C- 270 ". If there are any questions concerning this subject, please contact me at the Masonry Institute office. Mutual Materials P.O.
