Dear Parks Commissioners:
Jim Haggerton, Mayor
Thank you very much for your letter of February 20, 2013 regarding the issue of transportation
and need for greater access to the many amenities and services our wonderful City has to offer.
Our recently adopted Strategic Plan echoed this same concern from our residents, comments
like; "look for ways to enhance transportation services ", "increase access to social services ",
etc. Several current projects are aimed at addressing this issue.
The City and King County Metro are partnering to replace existing, inadequate transit stops in
Tukwila's Urban Center with a new Transit Center. This Transit Center will serve as a major
station for the new RapidRide F Line bus transit routes. This project will result in a higher
density, mixed -use, walkable community. A new pedestrian - bicycle bridge will connect the
Tukwila Urban Center to the commuter rail station and help support a pedestrian friendly,
transit - oriented urban community.
The Strategic Plan Steering Committee (made up of representatives from the community,
businesses, City Council and staff) shared ideas and concepts similar to those mentioned in your
letter: increased bus service within Tukwila, a community shuttle, and others. Over the next 18
months, staff will be updating the City's Comprehensive Plan, and there will be more
opportunities for community outreach and discussion regarding greater accessibility to City
services for our residents. I share your concerns regarding this issue, and am hopeful that a
solution can be developed in the not - too - distant future.
Sincerely,
1
Jim Hag
