Mullet, Mayor Department of Community Development Steve Lancaster, Director To: Community Affairs and Parks Committee ~~ Steve Lancaster, Community Development Director From: Date: January 2007 Subj ect: Southcenter Square Street Names Background Two new streets are being built and eventually dedicated to the City as part of the Southcenter Square development. For the interim they have been labeled North Street and East Street. (Attachment A) Both streets will eventually be extended and provide local access and additional circulation options for the urban center. Attachment B shows the planned street extensions in dashed lines. When Corporate Square redevelops, the North Street would eventually connect Southcenter Parkway with Andover Park West. Vacation of the two Corporate Drive cul-de-sacs and combining them into one street that aligns with the North Street will provide the connection. The East Street will connect Minkler Boulevard with the future east west street along the south edge of Tukwila Pond Park using the adjoining property lines of the Macy warehouse and Corporate Square properties. Issue The tradition in Tukwila is to give streets a name in the urban center (as opposed to numbering.) From a practical standpoint, the current building numbering system makes it difficult to correctly use a numbering system in the area. Existing streets names include a number of former Mayors of the City of Tukwila such as Strander, Minkler, Todd and Baker. Optional name sources could be rely upon local flora or fauna such as "Hazelnut," "Indian Plum" or "Coho Salmon;" or geographic such as "Pond," or "River;" or "Centennial" in honor of the City's upcoming celebration. Researching persons of historical and political interest brought Ed Bauch and Mae Harris to the forefront. Ed Bauch was active in Tukwila government, serving as a Mayor and Council member. He was responsible for building trails, the City Hall and establishing the Sister City pro gram with Ikawa Japan. Mae Harris had a long career with the City as both a City Treasurer and then as an elected Council member and Council President. She served the City continuously from 1964 until 1989 and volunteered to represent Tukwila on a variety of intergovernmental boards and commissions thus greatly benefiting Tukwila's standing in the region. Recommendation Bauch Street - for the north street Mae Harris Drive - for the east street Forward this recommendation to the Committee of the Whole for discussion. Attachment: A.
