HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOPCAB 2014-01-09 Minutes City Of Tukwila Jim Haggerton, Mayor Police Department Michael Villa, Chief of Police An Accredited Agency COPCAB Minutes January 9, 2014 6:30pm-8:00pm Present: Chief Villa, Chris Partman, Kim Karns, Jerry Thornton, Lynn Churchill, Art Rosengren, Jun Castillo 1.Minutes from 12/12/13 meeting approved. 2.Chief’s Update  Staffing: Three lateral and two new officers are in the background process. o Officer Valdez off FTO, two others getting close to done and progressing well o rd  In Jan 23 the Command Staff will be going over the draft of the Strategic Plan at the Command Staff retreat. After this step it will go to the Mayor and City council.  Key points of the Strategic Plan are: Crime Reduction Initiative o Facilities o High Performing Orgs o Outreach to community o th  Jan 25 the Chief has been invited to speak at the City Council Retreat rd  Also at the January 23 Command Staff Retreat the group will work on the 2014 goals and plan.  The citywide facilities plan is progressing. Elements are: Phase 1 was the needs assessment. This will be presented to City Council committee on o thth January 13 at 5:30 and also at a work session on January 15. Phase 2 is assessing the current facilities o Phase 3 is assessing alternatives o Phase 4 is funding plan – have this and all of the above done by June is the goal o Phase 5 is start location search and building designs o The department is likely to move ahead with a new evidence facility before this plan is o implemented, there is some money in the budget to replace the evidence storage, as this is a critical need. Break to listen to a vehicle pursuit of someone running from a shoplift call. Chief explained our pursuit policy about how officers are required to broadcast: weather conditions, traffic, speeds, traffic laws violated other relevant information. Art asked how much time/investigation is put into finding the suspect. Fax (206) 431-3688 3.Ideas for COPCAB Awards  TAC Team for the TIB effort – voted to approve  Art nomination: Marjorie Bates, 91 years old. Resident of Tukwila most of her life. Keeps a vacant property clear of weeds and tidy. She also works in the gardens at TCC and Station 53. Picks up trash around the area and also will clear out ditches around town. Consensus was that she is a wonderful part of the community, but there is no tie-in to the police.  Kathy Hougardy and her blockwatch activities were discussed approved with one abstention.  Art nominated Jerry Thornton for an “honorable mention,” Jerry disagreed. 4.Good of the Order  Jerry – Last week MSNBC interviewed Sgt. Jon Thornton about a runaway steer that escaped and was running through downtown Auburn. It ended with a wrangler riding on the hood of a patrol car to rope the steer. Jerry likes the calling 911/Non-Emergency number cards and asked if they could be made smaller.  Art- there is a void of patrol cars racing with lights on up his street now that TIB is so quiet.  Chief - next month, strategic plan for the agenda.  Jun – is a Tukwila Emergency Communication Team board member. The goal is to have HAM radios in strategic locations around town. Members would be deployed to these locations in the case of an emergency. They do a field event in June or July with the Fire Department. Meeting adjourned at 7:45pm Next meeting will be on Thursday, 2/13/14 from 6:30pm-8:00pm.
