Update to Tukwila City Council
April 7, 2013
Tukwila, Washington
The City of Opportunity, The Community of Choice
Illegal garbage dumping at a vacant house. Neighbors complained of
the sight and smells. Foreclosure property. From first complaint
until clean up completed took three months (relatively quick!)
City hired private contractor at a total cost of $1833.26. Owner paid
in full within two weeks.

• Streamline code enforcement process
• Add temporary staffing
• Involve the community
Streamline Process
• Immediately issue Notice of Violation when
property owners fail to comply with initial
correction notice
• Shorten compliance deadlines
• Initiate abatement actions
• Monitor and report back to Council
• Create Abatement Triage team
Add Temporary Staffing
• Contract .5 FTE Code Enforcement Officer
• Reassign Administrative Support as Acting
Code Enforcement Officer who will focus
solely on residential nuisance abatement
• Hire full -time administrative support
• Require rental inspections be performed only
by private inspectors
Community Involvement
• Community -wide "Spring Clean Up"
— First weekend of June (tentative)
— Site dumpsters in neighborhoods to encourage
disposal of debris
— Junk vehicle removal effort
• Institute "free dump pass" program for code
enforcement cases
