In keeping with its commitment to the construction industry ISAT is proud to have been the first recipient of an 1CBO ES Evaluation Report for its third party tested seismic bracket designs. Subject ES Report #PFC 5566 details the strength values for ISAT's family of seismic brackets including bracketry utilizing !SAT's unique "Rod Capture" technology. A full copy of the 1CBO Report may be found at the back of the Manual. ISAT is based on extensive field experience in the seismic bracing of non - structural utility systems suspended from the tension zone of overhead decks or from other supporting structures. Design professionals and contractors deriving the most benefit from 1SA'I' designs will be those involved with new or remedial construction associated with the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) trades. The relevant utility components encompassed within the manual include: • FIVAC Duct • Mechanical Piping"' • Mechanical Equipment • plumbing and Process Piping • Electrical Conduit • Electrical Cable Trays and Bus Duct • Vibration Isolated Systems • Fire Protection Piping Whether performing work within a California hospital or within general commercial, institutional or industrial construction, the user will find that !SAT's engineered installation details encompass a range of efficient seismic bracing options with specific attention to ease of installation within congested areas - a problem common to most projects on which seismic bracing is required. •Paten! Code exclusions defined within LSAT delineating certain utilities that are not required to be seismically restrained are those exclusions created and allowed by OSI'HI). When used for construction under other codes, users arc advised to confirm the allowed exclusions. GENERAL CODE COMPLIANCE In addition to OS11PD, ISA'l' installation details and engineered bracing tables are also suitable for use under the following codes: 1997 Uniform Building Code 2001 California Building Code The BOCA National Building Code /1999 International Building Code 2000 Unified Facilities Criteria 1- 200 -01, Dept. of Defense VEMA 302 For projects requiring metric units, please contact 1 SAT Technical Service. LATERAL FORCE FORMULAS The 1SAT Applications and Design Manual provides seismic restraint requirements engineered for use within a broad range of horizontal accelerations. Primary end user input must first draw upon data specific to the project type, location, and the projects seismic design specifications. Once these parameters have been determined and certain basic calculations performed, LSAT ;s engineered Bracing 'fables and Detail Drawings can be used as a ready reference for the seismic bracing of suspended utilities within the specific facility. OSPHD, however, elected to delay adoption of the revised code formulas until issuance of the 2001 CHC, Volume 2, Chapter 16A. The implementation date for use of the new formulas for OSIIPD facilities is November], 2002. The new 1997 UBC and 2001 CRC code formulas calculate "Total Design Lateral Porte "(TD1.F), and require utilization of the following parameters: TOTAL DESIGN LATERAL FORCE VARIABLES Soil Profile Type Seismic Coefficient, Ca Component Amplification Factor, up Component Response Modification Factor, Rp Zone 4 Near Source Factor (Closest Distance To Known Seismic Source). Na Elevation Above Grade of Braced Element vs. Roof Elevation, h(x), h(r) See the NAT Project Worksheet located at the back of the Manual for the specific code formula. To obtain project worksheets for use with other codes, please contact ISAT Technical Service. As a point of comparison, under the 1994 Uniform Building Code the maximum horizontal force factor was .45g for the seismic restraint of rigidly supported utilities in an essential facility. As a result of the new 1997 UBC and 2001 CBC formula, the new maximum horizontal force factor for elements attached at roof elevation on non - essential facilities is 1.89 g's after having divided Total Design Lateral Force by 1.4 to convert to Allowable Stress Design. To provide uniformity of installation on a specific project, the horizontal acceleration calculated for utilities suspended from the underside of the roof deck (worst case) maybe used as the basis for selecting seismic restraint systems for all floors of the structure. However, to achieve economy of installation, the horizontal acceleration for each floor may be computed separately and designs meeting the minimum horizontal acceleration for each floor can be employed as drawn from the ISA7' bracing tables. /SAT ENGINEERED BRACING TABLES The cumulative result of the new formula is the need to provide engineered seismic restraint systems covering a substantial range of possible horizontal ground accelerations. Install seismic bracing for pipe runs meeting the following parameters: a. Ail fuel piping, medical gas and medical vacuum piping 1" in diameter or greater. b. All other piping 2 -1/2" diameter or greater for any end use. 2. All trapeze assemblies supporting pipes shall be braced considering the total weight of the elements on the trapeze computed as pounds per lineal feet. For the purpose of calculating weight, all piping is to be treated as full of water. 3. Unless an individual element on a trapeze would otherwise require bracing, brace trapezes with a minimum weight in excess of 10 pounds per lineal foot. 4. Pipes constructed of non - ductile materials (e.g., no -hub cast iron and plastic), shall have the brace spacing reduced to one -half of the spacing allowed for ductile materials. (Specific LSA Bracing Tables are provided for 2 %T" thru 12" diameter no hub, cast iron pipe). 5. Seismic bracing may be omitted from piping suspended by individual hangers 12" or less in length from the top of the pipe to the bottom of the structural attachment for the hanger. (On projects under the 1997 UBC, Volume 2 or the 2001 CBC, Volume 2 - applicable only where lateral motion of the piping will not cause damaging impact with other systems or structural members or loss of vertical support and where the hangers are detailed to avoid bending of the hangers and their connections). Important Notice: Elements 1 thru 5 derive from the 2001 California Building Code, Volume 2, Chapter 16A for state owned facilities and all hospitals or essential facilities under the jurisdiction of OSHPD. These criteria may be used in other jurisdictions including projects under the 1997 Uniform Building Code subject to the requirements of the project documents, prior approval of the Engineer of Record and approval of the local code authority. All styles are illustrated in Figure 1. Style 1: RCHW —Rod capturing hinged bracket, Style 2: RCC —Rod capturing bracket for cable. Style 3: ABF— One.piece bracket with a 45- degree bend for overhead attachment, used with an anchor or insert recognized in a current ICBO ES evaluation report Style 4; ABHW— Hinged anchor bracket for overhead attachment, used with an anchor or insert recognized in a current ICBO ES evaluation report. Style 5: AH90-- Seismic angle clip bracket with pre -tied wire assembly for overhead attachment, used With a fastener, anchor or insert recognized in a current ICBO ES evaluation report. Style 6: AB45 Seismic angle clip with pre -tied wire assembly for overhead attachment, used with a fastener, anchor or insert recognized in a current ICBO ES evaluation report 2.1 Style 1: 2.1.1 General: The TOMARCO RCHW seismic brackets are three -piece steel - bracket assemblies formed from '1,.- inch-thick (4.8 rnm) steel. RCHW58 and RCHW34 are formed from Veinch -thick (6.4 mm) steel. The bracket Is designed as a slip -on attachment to capture and restrain threaded rods commonly used to suspend utility or grid. RCHW38 brackets receive ' /,- inch-diameter (9.5 mm) threaded rod. RCHW 12 brackets receive' /,- -inch- diameter (12.7 mm) threaded rod. RCHW58 brackets receive hl,- inch- diameter (15.8 mm) threaded rod, and RCHW34 brackets receive'!.- inch- diameter(19.1 mm) threaded rod. Brackets consist of the following: 1. An upper rod capture latch. 2. A lower rod capture latch. 3. An inclinable bracket arm with an integral curled hinge. The upper and Tower brackets each have a single slot having a width that is 'I, inch (1.8 mm) greater than the diameter of the support rod. The slot in the upper latch is oriented 90 degrees wsth respect to the slot in the Tower latch. The dual (upper and lower) latches are held tightly in place by a nut on the threaded rod. The bracket arm has Copyright m 2002 253 -925 -1230 p.44 two a / inctrdiameter (14 mm) holes, and the hinge is welded with a '/ -inch (6.4 mm), 70 Iksi (483 MPa) fillet weld. Brackets are stackabte, allowing attachment of multiple brackets to a single support rod, facilitating the installation of brace arms, in both the transverse and longitudinal directions, from a common point on the utility. The bracket steel conforms to ASTM A 36. 2.1.2 Installation: The bracket size must correspond to the rod diameter supporting the utility or grid, and must meet the allowable seismic Toad requirements for the application. The hanger - restraining nut is first threaded up the rod. The lower bracket latch is then slipped onto the rod at the point where the rod is attached to the utility or grid. The upper bracket latch is placed over the rod. After laying the upper bracket latch flat onto the lower latch, a restraining nut is lightened against the top of the upper latch. A rigid brace arm is then attached to the seismic bracket. and the other brace arm end is secured to the overhead support. 2.2 Style 2: 2.2.1 General: The TOMARCO RCC Seismic Bracket is a single -piece steel bracket consisting of a "rod capture" openend slot and a cable -tie access hole. RCC 12 is formed from '/ -thick (8.4 mm) steel and RCC34 is formed from " / -thick (7.9 mm) steel. The "rod capture" element has a single slot with a right - angle curve. The slot is '/,, Inch (1.6 mm) wider than the diameter of the support rod. The rod capture element of the RCC bracket is held tightly in place by a nut an the threaded rod. RCC brackets are stackable, allowing attachment of multiple brackets to a single support rod, facilitating the installation of cables in both the transverse and longitudinal directions from a common point on the utility or grid. RCC brackets are sized to receive' /, -inch- (9.5 mm). ' /,-inc h- (12.7 mm), D/, -inch- (15.9 mm) and' / -itch- diameter (19.1 mm) rod. The bracket steel conforms to ASTM A 36. 2.2.2 Installation: The bracket size corresponds to the rod diameter supporting the utility or grid, and must meat the allowable seismic load requirements forthe application. The hanger restraining nut is fiat threaded onto the rod. The RCC rod- capture open -slot is then slipped ontothe rod at the point where the rod is attached to the utility or grid. The retaining nut Is tightened onto the top of the RCC brackets. A cable attachment is made between the RCC brackets and the corresponding overhead- support RCC brackets. 2.3 Style 3: 2.3.1 General: The TOMARCO ABF seismic bracket Is a three-hole, one -piece bracket with a fixed 45-degree angle bend.
