4Culture Grant Application — Exterior Painting
ISSUE:
Authorize staff to submit 4Culture grant application for proposed exterior restoration and
painting of Tukwila Heritage and Cultural Center.
BACKGROUND
The Tukwila Heritage and Cultural Center is in need of exterior painting and restoration
of damaged wood in preparation for the painting work. As Tukwila's historic former
school house, city hall and library, the Heritage and Cultural Center is a community
gathering place within the City. To preserve this historic building as an important
reminder of our past, it is time to prepare the exterior and paint it.
A grant opportunity with 4Culture is available to preserve historic buildings in King
County, and the City would like to apply for $26,280 towards the total cost of the
proposed $30,280 for the project. The grant application is due May 14, 2014. If the
grant is awarded, work would begin after June 1, 2015 and be completed by August 31,
2015. The City would provide $2,000 worth of in-kind labor and $2,000 as a match
toward the costs of the project. This match amount is well under our $25,000 budgeted
for maintenance and repairs of this facility.
RECOMMENDATION
Committee approval to submit the 4Culture grant request for funds to repair and paint
the exterior of the Tukwila Heritage and Cultural Center.
