The hose cutoff saw is used to cut various sizes of Parker 471TC hydraulic hose to length. This hose consists of a Nitrile -based synthetic rubber tube, steel wire reinforcements, and an abrasion - resistant synthetic rubber cover. The saw is fitted with a fan to convey odors outdoors. Particulate collects under the saw and is removed manually and not conveyed in the duct. Because the fan and duct remove nuisance odors and not hazardous emissions, the system is not a hazardous exhaust system as defined in IMC 510.1. 2. Per the response to item 1, IMC Table 510.8 is not applicable for this system. Nonetheless, notes on duct construction have been added to the drawing. 3. Per the response to item 1, IMC Section 510.2 is not applicable for this system. Nonetheless, notes regarding the fan have been added to the drawing. 4. In addressing the possible need for an explosion relief system or an explosion prevention system, IMC 510.8.3 invokes NFPA 69 — Explosion Prevention Systems. Chapter 3 of NFPA 69 provides for combustible concentration reduction as one option for explosion prevention. IMC 510.2.1 specifies that the concentration must be reduced to less than 25% of the lower explosive limit (LEL). The attached spreadsheet calculates the approximate concentration based on the volume of flammable vapor present due to evaporation or liquid carryover and the volume of exhaust air. The calculation uses equation 2.12 of Industrial Ventilation — A Manual of Recommended Practice (ACGIH). For the evaporation rate, as noted in the spreadsheet, the shop lead mechanic Mike Woods reports using at most about 5 gallons over the course of two days of heavy spraying. They use mainly naphtha, and to a lesser extent isopropyl alcohol. Of the 5 gallons, about 85% is recovered as liquid waste under the booth and disposed via the hazardous materials disposal process. As for heavy use, Mike judged that would mean about 50% nozzle on -time. Multiplying all this information together results 0 enrittrietr10 N LTR# 1 MO(r Brian P. Harr; RE, PMP Plant Mechanical Engineer 206 - 655 -5331 v of 0.0125 pints per minute of naphtha evaporation. The spreadsheet calculates a requirement of 14 CFM to achieve dilution to 25% of the lower explosive limit. The actual design ventilation volume is 4320 CFM, selected to achieve a booth face velocity of 180 FPM. This indicates the ventilation rate is over three hundred times the required ventilation. Clearly, the dilution is adequate even if the evaporation rate estimate is off a bit. Also, note that the nozzle is interlocked to not operate if the exhaust fan is not running. Therefore, the duct system does not require explosion relief or containment provisions. 5. Notes on the drawing specifying the fan and duct system components and performance have been enhanced to address these concerns. February 1, 2006 John S.
