City of Tukwila
ISSUE
Adopt City of Tukwila Hazard Mitigation Plan.
BACKGROUND
Jim Haggerton, Mayor'
INFORMATIONAL MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Haggerton
Finance and Safety Committee
FROM: Public Works Director
DATE: January 12, 2010
SUBJECT: City of Tukwila Hazard Mitigation Plan
In 2000, the Federal government enacted the Disaster Mitigation Act (DMA 2000; Public Law
106 -390) requiring states, local jurisdictions and tribal governments to develop and submit a
Hazard Mitigation Plan to FEMA. A FEMA approved Hazard Mitigation Plan allows the City to
apply for Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) and Pre Disaster Mitigation (PDM) Program
grant funds.
City of Tukwila currently does not have a FEMA- approved Hazard Mitigation Plan. To address
this issue, staff developed attached final draft Plan. The final draft Plan was completed through
the assistance, collaboration, and input from City departments and regional partners.
A FEMA- approved Hazard Mitigation Plan represents not only the City's commitment to reduce
risks from natural and technological /manmade hazards but it also puts the City in a more
favorable posture to accomplish mitigation initiatives through HMGP and PDM grant funding
opportunities.
The draft Plan will be posted on the City's website for public comment and ultimately submitted
through the Washington State Emergency Management Department to FEMA for approval.
Upon approval, the Tukwila City Council will be requested to adopt the Tukwila Hazard
Mitigation Plan.
Attachment: City of Tukwila Hazard Mitigation Plan (Final Draft). Additional copies of the Plan are available in the
Public Works Department.
