General
Units shall be dedicated downflow or
horizontal airflow. Operating range
shall be between 115 F and 0 F
cooling as standard from the factory
for all units. Cooling performance shall
be rated in accordance with DOE and/
or ARI testing procedures. All units
shall be factory assembled, internally
wired, fully charged with R•22 and 100
percent run-tested before leaving the
factory. Wiring Internal to the unit shall
be colored and numbered for simpli-
fied identification. Units shall be UL
listed and labeled, classified in
accordance to ANSIZ21.47 for gas
fired central furnaces and UL 1995/
CAN/CSA No. 236•M90 for central
cooling air conditioners. Canadian
units shall be GSA certified.
Casing
Unit casing shall be constructed of
zinc coated, heavy gauge, galvanized
steel, Exterior surfaces shall be
cleaned, phosphatizod and finished
with a weather-resistant baked
enamel finish, Unit's surface shall be
tested 500 hours In a sail spray test in
compliance with ASTM 8117. Cabinet
construction shall allow for all mainte-
nance on one side of the unit. Sorvico
panels shall have lifting handles and
be removed and reinstalled by
removing only a single fastener on tho
3.71 ton units and not more than
three screws on the 81.25 ton unite
while providing a water and air tight
seal. All exposed vertical panels and
top covers in the indoor air section
shall be Insulated with fire-resistant,
permanent, odorless glass fiber
material. The base of the downflow
unit is insulated with a foil faced,
closed•cell material The downflow
unit's base pan shall have no penetra-
tions within the perimeter of the curb
other than the raised 1'/•• high supply/
return openings to provide an added
water integrity precaution, if the
condensate drain backs up. The base
of the unit shall have provisions for
forklift and crane lifting.
Mechanical
Specifications
Unit Top
The top cover shall be one piece or
where seams exist, it shall be double
hemmed and gasket seated to prevent
water leakage.
Filters
One inch, throwaway filters shall be
standard on all 3.714 ton units, Filter
rack can be converted to two inch
capability. Two inch filters shall be
factory supplied on all units above 71
tons.
Compressors
All 3471 ton standard, 3.71 ton high
efficiency, and 10 ton high efficiency
units shall have direct-drive hermetic,
reciprocating type compressors with a
centrifugal oil pump providing positive
lubrication to moving parts. Motor
shall be suction gas-cooled and shall
have a voltage utilization range of plus
or minus 10 percent of unit nameplate
voltage. Crankcase heater, Internal
temperature and current-sensitive
motor overloads shall be included for
maximum protection, Shall have
internal spring isolation and sound
muffling to minimize vibration trans-
mission and noise. External high
pressure cutout shall be provided on
16 and 171 ton standard models. Low
prossuro switches shall bo standard.
81, 121, and 171 ton high efficiency
units, and all 20 and 25 ton unite, shall
have direct•drivo, hermetic, scroll typo
compressors with centrifugal type oil
pumps. Motor shall be suction gas-
cooled and shall have a voltage
utilization range of plus or minus 10
percent of unit nameplate voltage,

vibration transmission and noise.
Winding temperature limits and
compressor overloads shall be
provided with the Trane 3DID Scroll,
The Copeland scrolls used on the
1215 and 171/2 ton high efficiency units
have crankcase heaters. The 15 ton
high efficiency unit contains both a
reciprocating type compressor and a
scroll type compressor, thus, all
compressor information provided
applies to this model,
Refrigerant Circuits
Each refrigerant circuit shall have
independent fixed orifice expansion
devices, service pressure ports and
refrigerant line filter driers factory-
installed as standard, An area shall
be provided for replacement suction
line driers.
Evaporator And Condenser Coils
Internally finned 3/8' copper tubes
mechanically bonded to configured
aluminum plate fin shall be standard.
Coils shall be leak tested at the
factory to ensure pressure Integrity.
The evaporator coil and condenser
coil shall be leak tested to 200 psig
and pressure tested to 450 psig.
Gas Heating Section
The heating section shall have a drum
and tube heat exchanger design using
corrosion resistant steel components.
A forced combustion blower shall
supply premixed fuel to a single
burner Ignited by a pilotless hot
surface ignition system, In order to
provide reliable operation, a negative
pressure gas valve shall be used that
requires blower operation to Initiate
gas flow, On an Initial call for host, the
combustion blower shall purge the
heat exchanger 45 seconds before
Ignition, After throe unsuccessful
ignition attempts, the entire heating
system shall be locked out until
manually reset at the thermostat.
Unite shall be suitable for use with
natural gas or propane (field Installed
kit) and also comply with California
requirements for low NOx emisalono.
Unite under 5 tons shall have a single
stage high or low heat option, The 614
and 71/2 ton units shall have either
single or two stage heating options
and the 81 through 25 ton unite shall
have two stage heating.
Outdoor Fans
The outdoor fans shall be direct =drive,
statically and dynamically balanced,
draw through in the vertical discharge
position. The fan motor(s) shall be
permanently Lubricated and have built.
In thermal overload protection.
Indoor Fan
The 3.5 ton units shall have a direct -
drive, FC centrifigal fan. Units over 5
tons shall have belt driven, FC
centrifugal fans with adjustable motor
sheaves. Units over 71 tons shall
have an adjustable Idler -arm assem-
bly for quick - adjustment to fan belts
and motor sheaves. All motors shall
be thermally protected. Oversized
motors shall be available for high
static operations.
Controls
Unit shall be completely factory wired
with necessary controls and contactor
pressure lugs or terminal block for
power wiring. Units shall provide an
external location for mounting fused
disconnect device. Microprocessor
controls shall be provided for all 24
volt control functions. The resident
control algorithms shall make all
hooting, coding and/or ventilating
decisions in response to electronic
signals from sensors measuring
Indoor and outdoor temperatures, Tho
control algorithm maintains accurate
temperature control, minimizoe drift
from set point and provides bettor
building comfort. A centralized Micro-
processor shall provide antl•short

Casing
Unit casing shall be constructed of zinc
coated, heavy gauge, galvanized steel.
All components shall be mounted In a
weather resistant steel cabinet with a
painted exterior. Whore top cover
seams exist, they shall be double
hemmed and gasket sealed to prevent
water leakage. Cabinet construction
shall allow for all mafntonanco on ono
std® of the unit. Service panels shall
have handles and shall bo removable
while providing a water and air tight
seal. Control box access shall bo
hinged. The Indoor alr section shall bo
completely Insulated with tiro resistant,
permanent, odorless glass Tibor
material. The base of the unit shall have
provisions for crane lilting.
Filters
Two Inch, throwaway filters shall be
standard on all size units. Two Inch
'rilgh efficiency", and lour inch "high
efficiency" filters shall be optional.
Compressors
Trane 3•D' Scroll compressors have a
simple mechanical design with only
three major moving parts. Scroll type
compression provides inherently low
vibration. 3•D compliance provides a
completely enclosed compression
chamber which leads to Increased
efficiency. Exhaustive testing on the 3D
Scroll, including start up with the shell
full of liquid, has proven that sluggging
does not fail involutes, Direct•drive,
3600 rpm, suction gas-cooled hermetic
motor. Trane 3•D Scroll compressor
includes centrifugal oil pump, oil level
sightglass and off charging valve.

Refrigerant Circuits
Each refrigerant dreuit shall have

Evaporator and Condenser Coils
Condenser coils shall have 3 /e" copper
tubes mechanically bonded to lanced
aluminum plate fins. Evaporator coils
shall be ' / :" internally finned copper
tubes mechanically bonded to high
performance aluminum plate fins. All
colts shall be leak tested at the factory
to ensure pressure integrity. All colts
shall be leak tested to 200 psig and
pressure tested to 450 psig. All dual
dreuit evaporator coils shall be of
Intermingled configuration.
Outdoor Fans
The outdoor fan shall bo direct-drive,
statically and dynamically balanced,
draw through In the vertical discharge
position. The fan motor(s) shall bo
permanently lubricated and have built-

Gas Heating Section
The heating section shall have a drum
and tube heat exchanger(s) design
using corrosion resistant steel
components. A forced combustion
blower shall supply premixed fuel to a
single burner ignited by a pilotless hot

surface ignition system. In order to
provide reliable operation, a negative
pressure gas valve shall be used that
requires blower operation to initiate
gas flow. On an Initial call for heat, the
combustion blower shall purge the
heat exchanger(s) 45 seconds before
Ignition. After three unsuccessful
Ignition attempts, the entire heating
system shall be locked out until
manually reset at the thermostat. Units
shall be suitable for use with natural
gas or propane (field installed kit) and
also comply with California
requirements for low NOx emissions,

The purpose of this marketing guide Is to provide a reference to the capacity and
efficiencies of large rooftop products from 271/2.60 tons. The ratings are
determined at ARI 360 conditions.
Deflnflon of Terms:
MBh -1000 STU per hour or 1000 BTUH.
EER M Energy efficiency ratio. A ratio calculated by dividing the net cooling
capacity in MBh by the total power Input In kw at any given set of rating conditions
expressed In STUN per watt.

Dear Sir:
The attached set of mechanical plans have been reviewed by
The Fire Prevention Bureau and are acceptable with the
following concerns:
1. H.V.A.C. units rated at greater than 2,000 cfm require
auto - shutdown devices. These devices shall be separately
zoned in the alarm panel and local U.L. central station
supervision is required. (City Ordinance #1742)
H.V.A.C. systems supplying air in excess of 2,000
cubic feet per minute to enclosed spaces within
buildings shall he equipped with an automatic shutoff.
Automatic shutoff shall be accomplished by
interrupting the ower source of the air - moving
equipment upon detection of smoke in the main
supply-air duct served by such equipment. Smoke
detectors shall be labeled by an approved agency for
air -duct installation and shall be installed in
accordance with the manufacturer's installation
instructions. (UMC 608)
Dedicated fire alarm system circuit breaker(s) shall
be equipped with a mechanical lockout device. (NFPA
72 (1- 5.2,8.2))
Duct smoke detectors shall be capable of being reset
from the alarm panel. (City Ordinance #1742)

2. All electrical work and equipment shall conform
strictly to the standards of The National Electrical Code.
(NFPA 70)
An aisle to and working space shall be provided for
each electrical panel. An aisle width not less than
24 inches shall provide access to the panel and 30
inches of working space shall be provided direct! in
front of the panel. (NEC 110-16(a), NEC 110-16(c))
Each circuit breaker shall be legibly marked to
indicate it's purpose. (NEC 110 -22)
Any overlooked hazardous condition and /or violation of the
adopted Fire or Building Codes does not imply approval of
such condition or violation.
